Many of us have “bleached” or lightened hair in one form or another. Whether you have balayage, highlights, just the money-piece in the front, or fully bleached from root to tip, you have to treat your lightened locks with more care than usual. The lightened hair has been stripped of its natural pigments and the cuticle is now more fragile. Because of this, you’ll need to focus on what type of products you’re using a little more than you would if your hair wasn’t bleached. Thankfully, there are advanced, scientifically formulated products on the market to keep your hair in top shape and toned in between appointments! Always ask your stylist what they recommend since they know exactly what they used on your hair and know its current condition well. If they don’t have any recommendations (even though they should), we do! Here are the professional’s top choices to care for your newly lightened tresses.
OLAPLEX

REDKEN is known by name and reputation for being one of the best professional brands for a long time. The Acidic Bonding line is new and is highly effective and repairing damaged hair with citric acid and bonders. This collections has a shampoo and a conditioner that will help your bleached hair stay in top shape.
Product recommendations:

MATRIX
MATRIX is one of my personal favorite brands. They have a new line called Unbreak my Blonde as part of their Total Results line along with Purple and Blue toning Shampoos to keep your highlights from becoming brassy in between appointments. The Unbreak My Blonde collection has a shampoo, conditioner and a leave-in conditioner for you to try.
Product recommendations:
MATRIX Unbreak My Blonde Shampoo – $16.80
MATRIX Unbreak My Blonde Conditioner – $16.80
MATRIX Unbreak my Blonde Ridings Leave-in Conditioner
Toning shampoos/conditioners can be used once or twice a week to counteract brassiness in between appointments. Your stylist will almost always tone or gloss your hair after your lightening service. Toners are demi-permanent and will fade before your next session, so these products can help care for bleached hair in between! Matrix has a Brass Off shampoo and a So Silver shampoo for you to try.
Matrix Total Results Brass Off blue toning shampoo – $17 (for dark blonde/caramel/light brown highlights)
Matrix Total Results So Silver purple toning Shampoo – $17 for platinum to light blonde/light ash tones
Combing your hair gently with a wide-tooth comb and even sleeping on a satin pillowcase can help your hair stay tangle-free and smooth. Forgoing heat styling whenever possible and using a heat protectant spray is vital when you can’t avoid the blow dryer or curling iron!
