While summer is the season that practically everyone seems to anticipate the most, it can seem to drag on for those of us who prefer fall. Sure, summer provides warmer weather, more vacation time and a plethora of other perks, but when it comes to holidays and events, the colder seasons take the cake. Now that the Fourth of July is over, it’s difficult finding an approaching holiday to look forward to or celebrate with your loved ones. If you’re someone who loves a good party and hates waiting through the rest of the summer, Summerween is the perfect event for you!
What is Summerween?
My friends and I just recently hosted our second annual Summerween party and it was a blast! We were inspired by an episode of Gravity Falls (season one, episode 12 to be exact) in which the people of the town love Halloween so much that they celebrate it twice a year. Summerween combines all the best aspects of Halloween with the warm weather of summer. If you were wondering: “when is summerween?” don’t worry! Any day you’re looking to have fun is perfect. If you’re thinking of celebrating this year, here’s everything you’ll need to make your first Summerween one to remember.
One of the best parts of celebrating Halloween in the summer is that you don’t have to plan your costume around cold weather! Though you won’t be going trick-or-treating, there’s no reason why you and your friends shouldn’t dress the part.
Whether you go all out with the fake blood and scary costume or you keep it simple with a pair of Mean Girls inspired animal ears, wear what you feel is right! You can also give the event an extra edge by incorporating a costume contest. “Most accurate” and “funniest” are just a couple of categories you can use to judge each other’s outfits. If you’re unsure about going alone, try coordinating costumes with a group of friends! Here are some quick group costume ideas.
- “Clue” characters
- Players from Mario Kart
- Marvel or DC superheroes
Maybe you prefer to attend your first Summerween solo, in which case you’ll need to put together a costume on your own. Some easy and classic costume ideas include:
Now that you know what you’re going to wear, it’s time to figure out how you’ll decorate (if you’re hosting, that is). Carving pumpkins is obviously the way to go in the fall, but in the summer, try substituting watermelons. Make sure to carve them outside, as the process can get pretty messy. This is a perfect pre-party activity because you’ll have snacks to serve your guests in addition to a freshly carved jack-o-melon! My friends and I also brought a ton of candles to add to the spooky atmosphere and they were perfect. Bonus points if they’re fall or Halloween scented. In a further effort to stay on theme, my friends and I added a table in the corner for tarot readings. Feel free to switch things up if you don’t want to do the same. Substitute a card or board game in place of the tarot cards – whatever you think your friends will enjoy! Make it your own.
Funnily enough, this was one of the most difficult aspects of Summerween to work out. The question of what type of music to play at an event that combines summer with spooky music can be a difficult one to answer. After a lot of debate, here are some songs that we agreed matched the theme perfectly and might provide you with some inspiration.
- “Maneater” by Nelly Furtado
- “Disturbia” by Rihanna
- “Somebody’s Watching Me” by Rockwell
- “Psycho Killer” by Talking Heads
- “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult
Whether you decide to follow all of these tips or completely make it your own, your Summerween will be a success as long as your friend group has a good time.
