If you’re a book lover like me, you know sometimes you just need to scream about your recent read. But sometimes there’s no one to scream to. If you don’t have any reader friends, it’s hard to keep all that emotion bottled up when you want someone to experience it with. Reading can be a very solitary hobby, but it doesn’t have to be. If you’ve been wanting to join a book club but can’t find one in your area, look no further than Fable. With this app, you can create and join as many book clubs as you want. You can connect with fellow readers who love the same books as you do and discover your next favorite book with monthly club selections. Keep reading to learn more about the bookworm haven that is the Fable book club app.

What Is Fable?

Founder and CEO Padmasree Warrior launched Fable in 2021 as a way to “deliver the world’s best social experience with exceptional stories in service of mental wellness.” In the company’s “About” section, Warrior states that books were her escape from stress growing up, and she wanted to help provide that experience for others.

With Fable, readers can join various book clubs and discuss their reads with fellow club members. Each club reads at a different pace, with some reading a new book every month and others tackling longer or more complex books for months at a time. You can follow other readers’ profiles to see what they’re reading and create lists to organize books you’ve read and want to read. There is also an option to buy ebooks in-app, as well as download some free options. With the free subscription, you can create your own private book club with up to 20 members or a public club that any Fable user can join.

There are also two premium subscriptions available. With the Fable Premium Single Club membership, you’ll gain access to a premium book club not available to those with the free membership. This gives you access to exclusive events, discussion prompts and resources.

The Fable Premium All Access membership is similar to the Single Club membership but it grants you access to all premium clubs rather than just one. You can also create a private book club with unlimited members rather than the 20 provided with the free version.

How Does It Work?

When you create your Fable account, you’ll be presented with a number of book clubs to join. Once you join a club, you’ll gain access to the club’s lobby, kick-off, chapter and reflection discussion rooms. The lobby is where you can introduce yourself and get to know the other club members. Kick-off introduces the club’s current read, and you can comment on events in the book in its respective chapter room. When you’ve finished reading, you can leave your final thoughts and rating in the reflection room.

You also have access to the club’s reading schedule, which provides you with deadlines as to when you’re supposed to read to a certain section. Most clubs aren’t strict about this, however, and you’re free to read at your own pace. And if you’re not interested in the club’s current read, skip it and come back for the next one! Fable is meant to be fun after all. It’s not supposed to feel like assigned reading.

Club Recommendations

No matter what your favorite genre is, there are a ton of awesome book clubs to join on Fable. With so many options, however, it can be overwhelming trying to figure out where to start. If you need some help deciding which clubs to join, here are some of my recommendations.

Bookish Swifties Club

If you’re a fan of books and Taylor Swift, this is the club for you. The monthly books are typically based on Taylor Swift’s lyrics and members have a fun time connecting characters and plot points to their favorite Swift songs. There’s also a YA version, and you can join the club Discord for even more bookish swiftie fun!

Boygenius Book Club

Along the same lines as the Bookish Swifties Club, Boygenius Book Club is perfect for fans of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus’s supergroup. This club reads a new book each month, and each selection is a book that has been recommended by one of the boygenius members.

Horror Classics Book Club

This club is moderated by Dracula himself, so what more could you ask for? This is a great option for those wanting to read more classics, as the books are always free and there are discussion prompts to get you thinking about what you read. Dracula often pops in to provide insight or to reply to your comments.

Read With Padma

What better way to start off with Fable than by reading with the founder herself? Padmasree Warrior moderates this book club, which reads both popular fiction and nonfiction books.

If none of these suit your tastes, that’s fine, too! Fable has clubs for every niche genre you can imagine, so you’re sure to find one you love.
