Let’s face it: every year, when the leaves start dying and the temperature drops, we get so excited to switch out our summer clothes for our fall/winter wardrobe. But sometimes, we look at our winter clothes, and they are lacking in certain areas, so we find ourselves wearing the same sweater we’ve had for years (not speaking from personal experience). However, instead of going out and buying all these new clothes, we can actually go back to so many clothes we loved wearing during the summer and use the power of layering to stay warm. So today, let’s dive into how you can do just that.
Dresses
When it comes to how to wear summer dresses in winter, you’ll find there is a common theme: layering. So, for example, if you have a floral tank-top dress, you can pair it with a solid-colored fitted long-sleeve top underneath in a color that complements the ones within the dress itself.
And vice versa, if you have a solid-colored dress, you can also wear a patterned long sleeve underneath it. If your dress isn’t super fitted, you’ll probably be able to get away with layering a sweater for some extra added warmth.
You can also find fleece-lined tights to keep your legs from getting chilly, but they look like you are still just wearing regular tights! This also goes for wearing your summer mini and maxi skirts in the winter. Throw on some structured boots, and you’ll be ready to walk out the door!
Linen
You may think that linen is something that you wear exclusively during the winter months, but you can absolutely style it to work in the cold. Since linen is a very flowy material, you can comfortably fit an extra pair of leggings under linen pants to keep you warm. I love to style mine with some clogs or platformed uggs with some warm wool socks.
Now, here’s where you can get fun with layering. Up top, definitely utilize the cardigans you have lying around in your closet. It can be a great way to make the outfit look cohesive while also adding interest with the contrasting textures. I also love to pair them with a long, slouchy sweater with a button-up peaking out at the bottom.
Pairing linen tops with wool skirts or pants can do a lot to keep you warm, and you can also throw over a cardigan with a soft cashmere scarf to keep your upper body heat in.
Vests
Vests are such a fun way to upgrade any outfit and can be paired with almost everything we’ve discussed thus far. You don’t have to swap out your crochet vest for a puffer vest if you don’t want to, and they go really well over a lovely dress or long-sleeve top. You can also add one to a basic long sleeve and jeans outfit to spice it up a bit.
Tshirts
Tshirts are a little more restrained with what you can do with them in the winter; however, you can always layer a funky little long sleeve underneath to keep your arms warm or throw on a thick jacket over the long sleeve but leave it open so people can still see what the shirt looks like.
The main thing when it comes to wearing your summer clothes in the winter is making sure you mix them in with some warmer pieces to offset the temperatures and to have a good base layer down to keep you from shivering.
And there are just a few ways how to wear summer dresses in winter, along with your favorite linen, shirts, etc. Let us know what you think!
