Now that it’s December, Christmas time is in full swing, so it’s time to get out that Christmas decor! In the last few weeks, I’ve noticed people online talking about the different types of Christmas decor styles, and how they prefer to decorate. If you’re looking for some inspiration for your decorating style or want to find out your Christmas decor style type, read on!

Traditional Christmas

This is probably my favorite style of Christmas decor. In my opinion, it is most reminiscent of the Christmas party scene in The Nutcracker. This style is full of the usual red and green. Think red ornaments and white lights on a real tree, matching stockings hanging on the fireplace, and presents wrapped in red plaid wrapping paper. There are soft gold accents that make the environment feel warm and glowy and a decorative nutcracker or two (or, if you’re me, 20) as accents. Maybe even a few candy canes hang on the tree. Warm, ambient lighting from white taper candles illuminating the room, and a nice mug of hot cocoa sounds like perfection!

Colorful Christmas

This style, as indicated by the name, is full of color! Any lights outside or on the tree are multicolored, ornaments and bright and delightfully mismatched. The more traditional or nostalgic sides of colorful Christmas decorators stick to a more traditional green tree and maybe use some shiny tinsel, with lots of jewel-toned ornaments in geometric shapes. Somewhere there is bound to be an old homemade salt dough ornament too. The more hardcore colorful decorators get artificial trees in nontraditional colors, like pink! They decorate with all sorts of bold colors and shapes, like bright pompom ornaments and tissue paper flowers. Overall, it looks like a colorful candy wonderland.

Woodland Christmas

Woodland Christmas incorporates lots of green tones and natural elements into the decorations. These decorators tend to go with real trees and garlands and use pine cones and other types of foliage as ornaments. Accent colors for this style are typically gold and white, surprisingly very little red. Expect to see presents wrapped in that tasteful minimalist brown paper with twine and at least one dried orange slice garland. And, it can hardly be a woodland Christmas if there isn’t a fire going in the fireplace. If you like this aesthetic but want to have more of a cottage-core spin, check out this article!

Glam Christmas

Glam Christmas decorations are all about glitter and shine. Glam Christmas takes “silver and gold” to heart. Everything about these decorations sparkles or shimmers in some sort of way, there is no dull part! One of the most interesting decorations I’ve seen has been decorators taking fake glittery gold poinsettias and sticking them into the tree so they look like they’re growing in the branches.

Candy Cane Christmas

This style is pretty self-explanatory, but it incorporates lots of red and white to make everything look like a candy cane dream! I love candy canes, and this style is my second favorite. I especially love seeing pictures of these decorations where they incorporate red and white striped ribbon on the tree to make it look like there are candy canes woven in the branches.

Snowy Chrismas

Snowy Christmas decorations are primarily blue and white. They incorporate lots of white decorations with blue lights to get that winter storm feel. These decorators either go with artificial trees that have fake snow on them or they get white artificial trees. Some of my favorite spin-offs of this style are a blend between snowy and woodland, where there are lots of cute winter creature ornaments and decorations like little animals made out of wood and pine cones or little fake birds.
