Whether it’s in your hair, tying your shoes, or even on your dresses, bows have been the newest fashion trend obsession. The bow has been a symbol of grace, sophistication, and style. It’s a timeless embellishment that has graced our attire and accessories for centuries, and has undergone countless transformations.This trend has remained consistent through the last couple of months, but as we enter a new year, do we as a society still like them?
But the question is… are bows still in style?
Let’s unravel the current state of the bow trend and explore whether bows are standing the test of time in 2024.
Looking back on the past year, femininity and girlishness become more omnipresent across the fashion and beauty industries. Whether it was coquette core, Barbie pink, ballet core, the one thing that all have in common: Bows. So there’s no surprise to just how popular this trend has become because of these aesthetics alone.
On the other hand, bows are not just about aesthetics; they carry symbolism. In an era where self-expression and empowerment are central themes, bows are being embraced as symbols of strength, confidence, and individuality. Women and men alike are using bows to make bold statements and reclaim fashion as a form of personal empowerment.
For instance, many celebrities have paved the way for the revival of this trend. Some people have even debated on who really “started” the bow trend again. Music artists such as Gracie Abrams, Sabrina Carpenter, and Olivia Rodrigo have worn and referenced bows in their music constantly.
Thus, to say bows have made a significant mark on the past year, but I think it’s safe to say the trend is slowly fading.
Trends always eventually come back around one way or another. Though I personally love the trend, I think it is definitely becoming a tad over-saturated in the media and is quite frankly turning into a cliché.
Now that so many brands have done so much apparel and accessories pertaining to bows, it has been challenging to diversify yourself in the world of bows. Today, you will most likely find so many people wearing bows in different ways, not to mention even having bow tattoos. So overtime, it continues to become overused.
If the trend were to continue into the new year, designers and fashion enthusiasts need to find new and inventive ways to incorporate bows to avoid predictability. Maybe larger or more intricate bows, but that may pose challenges in functional attire. And now that more trends for the new year have been gaining attention, maybe it’s time to say goodbye to the old and hello to the new.
As much as I love a bow as the next girl, I think it’s time to say goodbye. Unless the bow is in style to create new and exciting ideas and silhouettes to fashion, I think ultimately we need to move on. Not to mention, it is evident that the fashion pendulum is pulling towards a more dark, dirty aesthetic influence. Fashion evolves like a living entity, and bidding farewell to the familiar bows opens doors to fresh and innovative trends. Say goodbye to the clean girl, fashion is looking for a more grimier and dark approach. And I think this is something that we just have to embrace. Embracing the shift towards a grittier aesthetic not only reflects the dynamic nature of style but also allows for exploration and self-expression in ways that transcend the traditional clean-cut image.
But one way or another, the bows will come back…but the question is when?
