Reading is a wonderful pastime. It is creative, grows your brain intellectually, and it is very pleasant to allow your imagination to whirl and work. That is the power that words carry, and a good book is something that many people need in this changing and interesting world. So, let’s delve into some interesting and underrated book series that you may have not known of—specifically, fantasy and sci-fi novels.
Game of Thrones – Dunk and Egg
You’ve got a fantasy mood? Or a medieval feeling? Or just got an itch for Game of thrones that House of The Dragon or the Main Series does not encapsulate. Then, I would advise you to see the sister novels of “A Song of Ice and Fire” or the highly known TV adaptation of Game of Thrones, if you wish for something lighter within the universe then Dunk and Egg is something that you should most definitely check out.
Taking place a hundred years before the main events of the series. You follow Sir Duncan the Tall, a hedge knight who goes from place to place looking for work and battle and adopts a young boy as his squire, Egg. However, they don’t realize the grand destiny that they both were going to embark upon during their travels.
I think that Dunk and Egg is both obscure and also a very good read. On a personal note, my mother doesn’t like game of Thrones due to the violence and dark themes, however, she has enjoyed the Dunk and Egg series due to it being more lighthearted and more so rooted in fantastical elements. I would say to most definitely give it a shot when you have the time or looking for something interesting to read!
Star Wars – Heir to The Empire Trilogy
Were you not satisfied with the Disney trilogy? Yeah, me too. However, old-school Lucas films have some of the greatest science fiction literature. Titled “Legends” due to the aquarian of LucasArts from Disney, Legends novels stand as obscure masterpieces in science fiction writing and the continuation of the star wars legacy.
I will be focusing on the Heir to The Empire trilogy.
After the fall of the death star, it follows a more intimate look at Skywalker and Solo’s lives following the end of the sixth movie. Luke is struggling with his place as a Jedi Master and wishes to rebuild the Jedi Order, however, Leia and Han are struggling with there duty and family life. You see a far more in-depth version that was not talked about within the movies, you see the character’s inner workings and just how they may act on the day-to-day.
Also, the fight scenes are plentiful. Filled with lightsaber-wielding heroines, clone twin brothers, and a foreboding future. Star Wars takes the cake when we talk about obscure series.
The Dune Series
Dune is pretty well known right now for its upcoming second movie. However, there are quite a bit of people that don’t realize just how long and plentiful the Dune series is.
With six spinoff books. Dune is the story of Paul Atredis, but not just that…but his lineage. Dune follows the effects of Paul’s actions, and it likewise shows the political turmoil that has shaped the universe and the dangerous waltz that Paul must dance to keep himself and those he loves alive.
The movies look very graphically well done. However, I would tell anyone that while the movies are good and look very nice, Dune reigns supreme with its master-crafted story elements and dialogue. While not as obscure as the others the Dune stories and chronicles have not been fully translated into films.
