The Dyson has made a name for itself in the hair tools world. In the last couple of years, we saw many influencers and creators on social media using the Dyson. Whether it’s the Airwrap or the Supersonic, Dyson’s technology of using air to style hair as opposed to extreme heat from straightening or curling wands was an innovation that caught all our attention. However, does the price justify this innovation? With the Airwrap costing $600 and the Supersonic costing $430, Dyson’s products are far from cheap or affordable.
I got the Airwrap as a birthday present two years ago. Learning how to use it took some time. The Airwrap consists of six attachments — the dryer, a 1.2-inch curling barrel, a 1.6-inch curling barrel, a firm smoothing brush, a soft smoothing brush and a round volumizing brush.
The dryer attachment is the one I use most in everyday life. It is super convenient and does dry my hair fairly quickly. As someone with long and thick hair, this saves me a lot of time. But this alone does not justify the price point at all.
I do give a lot of credit to Dyson’s curling barrels though. It uses air to curl your hair rather than the extreme heat that comes with curling wands and irons. Curling wands and irons can reach a temperature as high as 424°F. This high temperature can seriously damage your hair, especially when used frequently. This exposure to heat can dry out your hair, making it coarse and frizzy. It can also make your hair more vulnerable to split ends and breakage. Here’s where Dyson’s technology comes in. The Airwrap uses sensors to check its temperature around 40 times per second to make sure it stays under 302°F. Additionally, the Airwrap uses a “Coanda effect” to curl hair. This effect “uses a jet flow to follow the trajectory of a nearby surface.” This means that the barrel air will keep the hair wrapped around it so you don’t have to manually curl your hair the way you would with a curling wand or iron.
Learning to curl hair with the Dyson was a bit difficult at first. With thick and long hair, the curls did not last very long at all. It felt very discouraging at first and I thought I had wasted my parents’ money. Then, I learned about the cooling feature after scrolling through numerous “How to curl your hair with the Dyson Airwrap” TikToks. I had learned that the Airwrap was actually best used when your hair was still damp. It simultaneously dries and curls your hair at the same time. The cooling feature is a setting on the Airwrap that is supposed to “hold” the curl after using the hot hair to curl it. After learning about this, styling my hair and having the curls hold became much easier. However, it still took around an hour to do my whole head. There’s a lot of hair to work with so no matter what tips or tricks I try on TikTok, there wasn’t much wiggle room for how much time I could really save. When I do take the time out of my day to curl my head though, the curls typically last around two to three days. By the third day, the curls are very loose but the ends are still curled. I’d say this is pretty impressive, especially after two nights of sleeping on it and without any extreme heat application.
So, is the Dyson Airwrap worth it? If you have the expenses to casually drop $600 on a fancy hair dryer, it does save your hair and makes life more convenient. But I don’t think it’s a necessity by any means. There are plenty of dupes on the market like the Shark dryer that serve the same functions. The Dyson is definitely a nice thing to have but you do not need to put a dent in your bank account to get it.
