We are not far from March and I don’t know about you but mentally I am already in Summer, enjoying the warm weather, days by the pool, my Latin playlist, and sipping on a refreshing drink. As soon as Christmas is over I want the cold weather to end and put my swimsuit on for the summer. This year Summer is coming early with the release of Bad Bunny’s hit album DtMF (Debí Tirar Más Fotos) last month which is making top charts and history. This album is dedicated to his home of Puerto Rico and the nostalgia it brings through the rhythms and beats. After this release, he has already been on Jimmy Fallon, started a TikTok trend, and got people talking about Puerto Rican culture and style. I am sure you have heard of Bad Bunny’s name before but if not he is one of the hottest Latino artists right now and seemingly every time he releases a new album, the songs become insanely popular almost overnight. DtMF was released just last month on January 5th and his songs are already on the top charts, with DtMF being #4 on Apple Music’s trending songs. You might be thinking why release an upbeat, reggaeton album in the winter? But I think the timing of this release was very smart because by the time summer comes around everyone will have memorized the lyrics! Debí Tirar Más Fotos translates to “I should’ve taken more pictures” where he sings about how he should have embraced and appreciated life in the moment more and enjoyed the present before time slipped away. In an interview with Jimmy Fallon, he talked about how this album pays homage to his roots back in Puerto Rico and remembers all of the special moments spent with his family and friends there. Even the album cover has a sense of nostalgia for people who grew up with Hispanic families because the two white chairs outside resemble the furniture that would be out for family gatherings and cookouts where people would be up until 2 in the morning talking and having fun. This album is fun yet nostalgic for many people which has gotten it so popularized very fast.
Transcending Language
There are many genres of music out there and so much is being released all the time so it’s hard to figure out what to add to your playlist every month. I am sure many people who are not fluent in Spanish don’t listen to Bad Bunny or any Latin music at all because it is hard to understand. However, Bad Bunny and other artists have been breaking barriers and getting so many people to listen to their music because of the fun beats and styles. Where he could have stuck to streaming-friendly urbano-pop, Bad Bunny draws from older musical traditions including salsa, plena, and bomba. For this album, it was setting records with older generations never wanting to listen to música urbana more. His songs have reached a huge audience, sparked nostalgia, and even started a trend on TikTok where people post their family memories to his songs. This trend took over the internet and Bad Bunny even posted a video of him reacting to it and getting emotional. I think it’s beautiful how music can bring people and cultures together to think about great memories and the family and friends that surround us.

With a successful album like this, Bad Bunny decided to go on tour this Summer. He described the album as a party, remembrance, and rallying cry all at once, honoring the island’s vibrant culture and resilient locals struggling with the government neglect and displacement by American gentrifiers. As proof of his commitment, he announced a 30-day show residency in San Juan’s Coliseo de Puerto Rico; the first nine concerts will be exclusive to locals. DtMF has already had a big impact on the music industry but also on fashion. The Puerto Rican aesthetic is bright colors, flowers, sequins, island life, and swimsuits.
