Gen-Z is getting very creative and it is becoming very noticeable to see them taking over as social media managers. What Happened To Duo?

So, the tragic news was announced just six days ago through TikTok where they posted Duo benign carried away in a casket with the caption, “Guys duo died, btw I’m deaf I hope this is a sad song”… it was not a sad song but instead a risque country song which just added to the shock value of this video. At the end of the video is a photo of his obituary listing his date of birth to death, and his legal name which is ‘Duo Keyshauna Renee Lingo’ – Duo the Owl. This unexpected video got over 60.3 million views on their account, so that should tell you a lot about this brand’s impact on social media. This immediately caught the attention of many people, people were duetting the video and reposting it to ask around and talk about if this is for real. It even caught the attention of Dua Lipa. She subtweeted the announcement on Twitter with the caption, “ ‘Till death duo part”, and they responded by saying that more details surrounding his death would be announced soon. So what killed Duo? It was a mystery to us all until five days ago when the account posted a video of Duo getting hit by a Tesla Cybertruck, which was ultimately the cause of death. The caption said, “UPDATE: Reward for whoever can identify the driver. Please post any leads on TikTok. Thank you for your patience with us during these trying times. #RIPduo”. This was a very unserious and funny way to keep people engaged with this whole debacle.

Gen-Z Influence On Marketing

Duolingo is a great example of how social media marketing and engagement can completely reinvent a brand and make it successful or widely noticed just overnight. The death of Duo is not the first time they have gone viral or have been known to have a funny social media presence. In fact, they are one of the most popular that are noticed for their posts and commenting on random videos that would get over 10,000 likes because why is Duolingo commenting on a TikTok roasting Drake? This strategy is being used by other brands like Subway, Zillow, Kotex, and many more. Another fun thing brands are doing is if they have a video or post go very viral, they might post a behind-the-scenes of the production to show people the funny stuff that happened while filming.  It is always easy to spot a social media account that is run by a Gen-Zer because it usually has funny content, comments on usual posts, and up-to-date trends when you think the brand would have no idea. I think these brands are brilliant for hiring these people to do the marketing because it is very effective and everyone loves to see a funny video on their feed, If it is from a brand it is probably more likely you want to give your business to them. You especially know it’s good when the comments say, “ Give the marketing person a raise”. Marketing is not cookie-cutter and sophisticated like it used to and with the popularization of social media, you never know what you are going to see next.

So What’s Next For Duo

So now you may be wondering what is next for Duolingo since their infamous mascot was just pronounced dead. He was the face of the brand and the app, people only recognize Duolingo because of this green owl. Well, this is just the beginning of their marketing stunt and it is leading them into more opportunities for engagement for their users. They have already updated all of their profile pictures to dead Duo (RIP) where he has the crosses over his eyes and his tongue out. After announcing his cause of death, they issued a formal statement saying that of you feel inclined to share include your credit card number so they can sign you up for Duolingo Max in his “memory”. This was said jokingly of course but I thought it was funny they were making these jokes already. They also posted how in the app you can do your daily lessons and perform well on them to potentially bring him back to life. This is a smart way to get people on the app to engage more and even invite new users to get in on the drama. Based on their social media posts everywhere, they are not going anywhere after the death of Duo. However, this will be an opportunity to get more people to learn about Duolingo and they can have a little brand makeover. Whoever’s idea this marketing stunt was definitely needs a raise.

In the crazy world of social media marketing, Duolingo has once again proven that humor, creativity, and engagement are key to capturing an audience’s attention. The “death” of Duo may have shocked users at first, but it’s clear that this is just another chapter in the brand’s ongoing strategy of viral content. Whether Duo makes a miraculous comeback or stays “dead” for good, one thing is certain—brands that master the art of social media will continue to dominate the conversation online, especially on TikTok.
