Are you in need of a dire haircut? I know I am. Usually, braids and twists are my go-to with a bit of color change every now and then, but I’m thinking of getting something different. Lately, I’ve been seeing this hairstyle called the Butterfly that’s been trending on social media mainly Tik Tok. It’s really cute and perfect for those with long, curly wavy hair.
The Butterfly Haircut is a hairstyle that has soft layers with shorter strands around the crown of the head to create a fuller look. It gives off a 90s vibe which has also been a trending aesthetic. I mean who doesn’t love a good 90s look?
The look was inspired by the character Rachel from Friends and it took the world by storm when people headed to their hairstylist to give them the “Rachel” look. If you want something that bounces with every step, has a choppy look, and fit your face then this butterfly hairstyle is for you!
Standing Out
Formally called the Draped-Layers haircut, The “Butterfly” stands out from any other haircut because it uses layers over the hair to frame the face and can come in a variety of different lengths. Traditional face framing hairstyles are more subtle, but what gives the Butterfly its charm is how chunky and heavy it is and the added contrast the overall look gives.
It’s a pretty simple and straightforward style that looks best when it’s blown out and the layers drape over each other toward your face like butterfly wings.
This hairstyle is pretty beneficial too if you want a cute low-maintenance hairstyle. It is also very good for growing out your hair and giving it a thicker appearance.
Butterfly Styles
The best part about getting a haircut is styling it! Good thing there are a few ways you can style your hair after getting the Butterfly cut. You can always let the hairstylist style it for you based on the length of your hair, the texture, and the curl pattern to help frame it best for your face. For an at-home version of the Butterly, you would have to blow out your hair first to give it the maximum volume and highlight the layers. Some people would suggest using a blow dryer and a round brush to style it and others would suggest using a Dyson Airwrap which is an all in one tool to achieve the same volume effect. For a more bouncier affect, hot curlers is definitely the way to go.
Products to maintain volume and bounce vary with hair texture. If you’re more on thin and fine hair then pick up your favorite mousse, styling foam, and volumizing mist. As for medium textures, a light mousse or volume spray would be best. And lastly for those with a thicker and kinky texture (like me) hair milk, leave-in conditioner, and blow-dry cream is best for you.
How Do You Ask For the Butterfly?
When you go to a hair salon and ask for a butterfly your hairstylist may not know what you mean at first or may not know how you want your hair to look. That’s why its important to bring pictures of the exact style of butterfly that you would like. That way there would be less confusion and frustration from both parties. Remember communication is always key!
Describing your hairstyle is another thing you would have to tell your hairstylist to make sure they get it right for you. For the full butterfly affect you should ask for heavy layering with a short face frame. Being unclear about this will lead the haircut into looking like a shag with a band which is what you’re not aiming for. Tell the stylist directly where you would like the hair to be cut.
Celebrities Wearing the Butterflies hairstyle
I give the butterfly haircut extra brownie points for being a hairstyle that can be worn but anybody. And I mean anyyyboddyyy. It doesn’t matter if you have long or short hair or have different textured hair like wavy, kinky, or straight you can pull off the butterfly any day at any time.
Just check out all of these celebrities that wore the butterfly:
- Shania Twain, a Canadian singer and songwriter and queen of country pop, wore this hairstyle several times including at a Forbes event where she was awarded the “Know your Value Award”. Hair is one of the things that she is known for and she has managed to push boundaries on the style of hair to wear such as brightly colored wings.
- Ayo Edebiri is an actress and comedian known for her roles in Abbot Elementary, The Bear, and Pixar’s latest film, Inside Out 2. She has become a rising star and she has been seen numerous times with a butterfly haircut and she looks absolutely beautiful every time! I love how she’s not afraid to let her natural hair out and show other young people like herself that it’s cool and okay to wear your natural hair.
- Who doesn’t love Sabrina Carpenter? If you don’t know who she is then I’m sorry to say but you’ve probably been living under a rock. Sabrina Carpenter has been in many films and TV shows and even produced her music. She’s been in Girl Meets World, Sofia the First, and the Hate You Give. She always rocked her butterfly haircut and amped up the popularity of it when she went on her “Short n’ Sweet” tour. It immediately took the hair salon by storm when fans begged to have the same hairstyle as their favorite music artist.
- Kelly Rowland is a famous actor, singer, and songwriter born and raised in Atlanta. She is most famously known for being a part of the girl group Destiny Child. Kelly has worn all sorts of looks from short to long to blond and even blue hair. But no one can deny that the butterfly looks stunning on her. It fits her perfectly.
- We all know how the Kardashians are always full of drama, especially on their reality tv show Keeping Up with the Kardashians. But one thing you can deny is that they always look good, especially their hair. Khloe Kardashian for example had fans racing to the hair salon to get the exact hairstyle as Khloe. The butterfly is her go hairstyle and has had a few variations over the years. Whenever she has the style on she always seems to make head turns with this beautiful hairstyle.
