We’ve all been there, getting really excited for a trendy haircut we want just to get it and realize that it doesn’t look the same as it did on people online. The post haircut regret can be real and brutal if it’s something that just doesn’t suit you and will have you questioning and rethinking your whole appointment while you try to figure out what went wrong. The best haircut will still look wrong if it doesn’t go with your face shape, so here is a guide to to some of the best haircuts for your face shape.
The benefit of choosing a haircut that fits your face shape is that it can help enhance your features and boost your confidence. Of course knowing your face shape isn’t the only thing to know before going to the salon. After doing research and settling on a cut make sure to also take into account your hair type, having curls or straight hair can still make it look it comeplety different so always ask your stylist for advice before starting the chop. With that said, here is some haircut inspiration for everyone based on some of the most common face shapes!
Oval
The most neutral face shape, if you have an oval face shape your features are probably well balanced with no specific features standing out too much, its versatile and flattering. Some tell-tale signs will probably be your cheekbones being the widest part of your face. Celebrities like Beyonce and Katy Perry are good examples of this face shape. The best options for this face shape are layered cuts, chin-length bobs, pixie cuts, buzz cuts, and crew cuts, all of which can enhance your natural symmetry and balance. If you are wanting to enhance that natural symmetry hairstyles that cover a lot of your face, too flat or voluminious can work against you.
Round
With wide cheekbones and some fullness in your face making you look younger than you are, a round face shape looks exactly how you would think. For this face shape layered bobs, lobs, curtain bangs, shag, or any other cut that will help frame your face and elongate it is the way to go. The main styles to avoid slicked-back hairdos, chin length cuts, and most importantly blunt bangs.
Oblong aka Rectanlge
Oblong faces tend to look more elongated than other face shapes since the brow bone, cheekbones, and jawline are about the same width. The two most noticeable features to help you decide what type of haircut to get for this face shape is whether you have a more narrow chin or forehoead area!
Since this face has an elongated appearance, it is important to choose a style that balances its length. Adding volume and layers to your cut can also help. Keep your hair’s volume in mind, and try to avoid any long or short cuts that will leave you with little to no movement.
Square
Defined by the brow bone, cheekbone, and jawline being about the same width, a square face shape tends to appear as having a strong jawline and looks really proportional overall. Face framing cuts like a long, layered cut will be your best friend for this face shape, and if you like to have bangs, make sure to go more wispy or curtain bangs.
Heart
If you have a more defined jawline and your face is wider in the cheekbones area but more narrow towards the jaw and chin, you have a heart-shaped face! We love that for you. And much like a heart, you most likely have a v-shaped chin, so choosing a style that allows for more volume near that area is a good starting point if you want a longer length, especially if you have waves or curls that you want to be the focal point. If you want to keep it short, let the pixie cut have its moment, or go for a bob or lob.
With the chin being a very prominent feature, the hairstyles you might want to steer away from are anything that might leave you with too much volume on top since it might just make your chin look even more narrow and throw off your facial proportions or long hairstyles that have no volume at all at the bottom.
Diamond
Since this face shape can be mistaken for round or oval, it gives some flexibility with what haircuts you can get. The tell-tale signs of this face shape lie in the strong cheekbones and delicate chin line; just look at Halle Berry or Jennifer Lopez. For those of you who can pull off the loose updo and have ponytails that always come out looking perfect, I’m jealous, but this is also most likely why. Again, since most styles will fit you, the only thing you will have to think twice about is getting a blunt bob that turns into a mushroom shape or short voluminous cuts that end up making your face look round or hide it.
Triangle
The last face shape I’ll talk about is the triangle face shape! Looking longer than they are wide, you distinguish this face shape by the narrow forehead area and the wide jawline that looks strong. The best example to look at is Timothy Chalamet. With a jawline that could cut glass, let that feature stand out by choosing styles that don’t take away from it. Volume near the temple, crown or below your jawline. Things to keep in mind is that choosing styles that have the bulk of their volume near the jawline, a middle part and crown-emphasizing cuts will make your shape more prominent and unbalanced.
If this short guide did not help you figure out your faceshape, don’t worry because it can be hard to differentiate sometimes. Not only are there tons of apps to help you figure it out, the TikTok face shape filter is pretty accurate!
Fully informed, head to the salon and feel like the best version of yourself!
