Father’s Day is still a relatively new holiday! Mother’s Day was the main inspiration because it was celebrated post-Civil War. Then, President Woodrow Wilson declared it to be a national holiday in 1914. Because of the popularity of Mother’s Day, there were discussions about celebrating fathers. Firstly, in 1908, there was a nationwide event to honor fathers who had passed away in the Fairmont Coal Company mine explosions. This event happened once! In 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd took the grassroots approach by selling her idea of having a celebratory day for fathers. With her efforts, Washington State held the first nationwide Father’s Day event in 1910! It wasn’t until 1972 that President Richard Nixon made Father’s Day a national holiday! Over 50 years later, the holiday is still popular amongst U.S. citizens and globally, with countries establishing their Father’s Day dates.
