If you’re like me, your feed is overflowing with Nintendo Switch’s new game, Tomodachi Life.
After seeing countless videos of creators/players making Mii characters of their favorite TV show or movie characters, I caved and bought the game. I was excited to start making characters based on my favorite TV show: Adventure Time. I first wanted to make Flame Princess as she’s one of my favorites and is objectively one of the coolest looking characters. But I quickly realized it wasn’t going to be as easy as I thought. While the game offers already created options of eye, hair, lip, nose, eyebrow, and ear shapes and colors, if you want your Mii to really look like a specific character, you’ll need to whip out your drawing skills. The “Add face paint” option is where you really have to get creative and use the tools provided to create your desired Mii.
What are the tools?
There are a lot of different options and ways to add details to your Mii’s. There is a text box
option to write a word, letter, or phrase. Then you have a sticker section with options varying
from stars and heart shapes to foods and animals. This is helpful if a character has a specific shape on them that you can just paste the shape on their face instead of having to draw it. There are also different paint options where you can choose the color and size of what you want to draw.

Start with the basics
I have found it the easiest to create my Mii characters by having a picture of said character
pulled up for reference. Then I use as much of the already made options to lessen the amount I’ll have to draw. Choosing the skin color, basic eye shape, mouth shape, and nose shape is a great way to get your Mii started and have a layout of their face shape. The hard part comes when you have to draw out specific features of your character. This is
where a website called “Living the Grid” becomes your best friend.
This website was created to help those with less than sub-par drawing skills (aka me) to still be able to create Mii’s and even objects for Tomodachi Life. The website is simple: you look up an image you want to recreate in Tomodachi Life, upload it to “Living the Grid”, and then it creates a pixelated layout of your image. It also includes the color palette used so you can have an even more exact replica of your character.

Get a stylus
Even with the help of “Living the Grid”, it can still be difficult to make precise drawings with just your fingers. Purchasing a stylus is the best way to create detailed drawings and images that look like a professional did them. You can easily find a stylus for your Nintendo Switch by searching “Nintendo Switch stylus” on Amazon.
Another tip
One last simple tip for creating your perfect rendition of your favorite characters in Tomodachi Life is to search on Youtube or TikTok: tutorial for blank in Tomodachi Life. So many people have already made detailed tutorials of specific characters and teach you step by step how they did it. If you like their rendition, this is a perfect option for you. If not, then Living the Grid and letting your creative juices flow is how you’ll make your Miis!
There’s no wrong way to go about creating your Miis in Tomodachi Life. It just takes a lot of trial and error and patience to learn the tools of the game and to make what you really want.
Whether you choose to use the already made options, free hand your drawings, or using “Living the Grid”, you will make something that is your own.
