Given the state of the world right now, it is hard to incorporate small yet enjoyable experiences that make life a little more fun. Many of us lose touch with a silly, playful mindset as we take on more responsibilities and deal with life as it revolves around us.
By definition, “whimsy” is the state of being whimsical, such as playful or spontaneous behavior. The concept of adding whimsy to your life has taken on psychology status for being aware of intentionally making room for more light-hearted, imagination, or wonderful experiences, says Hallie Kritsas, a licensed mental health counselor at Thriveworks. That could be leaving positive notes for strangers, assigning personalities or names to inanimate objects, or whatever you feel truly drawn to do because of your own curiosity. You could even add it to your style, home, or personality so a small piece of whimsy could be a part of your everyday life. It creates a sense of freedom and love that we should be incorporating into our lives.
Why People Want More Whimsy
As adults, many of us forget about our childlike wonder that is still within us all. As we grow and take on more stressors and responsibilities, life can start to revolve around efficiency, productivity, structure, and these fixed ideas that we need to have in order to live successfully. Depending on your job, budget, relationships, living situation, and much more, finding these whimsical self-expressive touches can be hard to cook up. However, even simple acts can reduce stress and break up the monotony of everyday routines.
To be whimsical or to not be whimsical. It often means to play, which is why most adults believe the act of being whimsical is childish. We don’t get enough playful moments despite their ability to boost our moods and relieve stress. It is a way of being creative, as well, and letting yourself tap into your imagination just because you can. It is a practice that slowly helps with anxiety and emotional regulation. You have to find a way to be present and think about the act of adding whimsy. It is a way that reminds us that we are just small people and there doesn’t have to be a deeper meaning in everything we are doing in life.
How To Be Whimsical
It wouldn’t be completely whimsical if there were some sort of guidebook on how to be whimsical in your life. That being said, there are some little tips and tricks on how to start adding a bit of whimsy. Come into this with an open mind, as that is a big start on letting loose and having whimsy.
Start small. Creating teeny tiny pockets of delightful moments in your everyday life, and soaking up little zaps of good feelings, can turn stressors and anxiety into small pieces of joy.
Tap into what whimsical might feel like to you, whether you ask yourself: “What do you often dream about?” Or “what did you really enjoy as a kid?” Remember back to a time where you felt really carefree and when you could really be yourself. Remember how, sometimes, it won’t hurt to try to be intentional with bringing whimsy behaviors into our lives, so pick a day to really feel yourself. Never lose touch with your silly self and forget how to be whimsical.
