The big question that almost all of us ask is: What is the purpose of our lives? Unlike big, unnecessary questions, side quests are known to be purposeless and used to break monotony for temporary curiosity and dopamine. To put it simply, side quests are about turning everyday moments into spontaneous and exciting adventures. A simple phrase stolen from video games can transform the usual experience into a magical existence.
The concept of side quests became real for people when more of Gen Z realized the 9-to-5 grind is really not the preferred way to live life. Going on a certain “side quest” means diving into an unexpected situation outside of the normal everyday responsibilities and plans. It could bring a slight spark of joy and excitement to what could be just another day. Maybe the art of them is the key to living a worthwhile livelihood.
What Makes Life Worth Living?
Our lives deserve to be more whimsical than how our current reality is treating us. Some of us have forgotten how to live life and not just live to survive. Side quests aren’t things that happen to occur so you can necessarily feel better about yourself; it’s more about the passion that builds up within you that then leads to you feeling more excited about living. Living with intention and not just routine is a big step to approaching a truly present life.
Think back on some of the most memorable days you have had recently. Were there days when something unexpected happened, when you somewhat impulsively agreed to do something you wouldn’t usually do, or when you took a different path back to your home? Embracing that impulsivity and seeking out new experiences is essentially the essence of side quests. The unexpectedness isn’t impulsive, but breaking out of your comfort zone and attempting something different is. Trying out a new occurrence and following that small curiosity in your brain can lead to a side quest that truly changes you.
The Effect Of Living Off Side Quests
When you start approaching life with this random side quest mindset, you begin to notice magic happening all around you. Since you are genuinely living life instead of trying to survive your way through another week, you notice the little things. You tend to appreciate nature more and go out to find the small things that others around us forget to thank. Love is everywhere, and it comes naturally when your mind has expanded. You grow stories to tell and develop higher levels of confidence that come from regularly doing things that scare you. You have trained your eyes and mind to see opportunities and a sense of possibility to situations instead of roadblocks and obstacles.
You Can Deal With It
Living with this passion and fire within you does seem careless and somewhat wasteful in your schedule. Some days, it is harder to find this whimsical energy and shape it into an eventful side quest. With work and money and life getting in the way, there will always be a blockage holding you back. However, life is not really something to be managed. We all have problems and goals we want to get over, but it is also an adventure and something to be meaningful. Memories need to be made in order for this “purpose” to feel at least a little complete. It is okay to take a break from the harsh reality and escape to a content moment.
Living with intention and rejecting the monotonous day-to-day grind is a big step. Now it’s time to adventure and start completing side quests!
