Katelyn Barr Spotlight: A Zillennial Musician You Need To Follow On TikTok

Q: Tell us your story! Where did you begin and how did you reach the caliber you’re currently at?
A: Hi! My name is Katelyn and I’m originally from Wayne, Pennsylvania. I am currently a senior at Georgetown University studying International Politics, Environmental Studies and French. I’m also taking a course that allows me to work on original music, which has been super exciting! (In the past I’ve struggled to set aside time during the school year to work on songwriting, so this has definitely been a great change for my output and growth as an artist). I began my musical journey through piano lessons and school musicals, and I am endlessly inspired by other artists and songwriters. They have helped me become the artist I am today.
Q: What makes you love what you do? How long have you been making music? Would you call it your passion?
A: I have been making music since I was a little kid taking piano lessons, although I began writing full original songs for my high school senior project. I love songwriting because it gives me a creative outlet to express myself and push my boundaries. I like finding stories to write about, experimenting with different genres, and learning from the people around me. Music is definitely my passion – both its creation and its consumption. Some of my favorite moments include finding an incredible new song or writing something I am proud of.
Q: What are some accomplishments or milestones you’ve reached lately?
A: I started my senior year of college in August, which has been both nostalgic and exciting. I want this year to last forever but I’m very proud to have made it to this point! I also turned 21 over the summer, which has been very fun. In terms of music, I haven’t had any measurable milestones recently, but I feel like I’ve finally figured out what kind of music I want to make.
Q: Tell us about your new music!!
A: I don’t have anything fully in the works right now, but I have been writing a lot and I’m excited about the future! Check back in a few months 😉
Q: Do you have any advice for someone who is starting out in the music industry?
A: I wouldn’t necessarily call myself a part of the music industry, but for someone just starting out with music, I would recommend using social media platforms like TikTok to share your work. Most of my support and listeners have been from that app, and it is also a great way to discover and connect with other musicians! For college students, I would recommend connecting with other artists on campus and taking advantage of resources like Quadio, a platform specifically designed to provide us with support and networking spaces.
Q: What do you want our readers to know about you and your music?
A: Every song that I have made has taught me a new creative lesson. I really feel like my best music has yet to be fully produced and released, and I am so excited for the possibilities. I hope you stick around 🙂
