A: I’ve always sang as I was brought up in a super musical family, so I grew up listening to anything and everything. From Avril Lavigne to Jack Johnson to Coldplay to The Chicks, it all shaped my love for it from a really young age! Kacey Musgraves and Taylor Swift were massive role models for me who eventually inspired me to become a singer-songwriter, so at 13 I picked up my guitar and just started writing! I’ve always wanted to perform and be creative, but it wasn’t until 2020 once I’d left full-time education I fully decided a career in the music industry was what I was going to pursue. The pandemic was a blessing in disguise for me, as it gave me the space to hone my writing skills and figure out what kind of music I wanted to make. I’m now doing a degree in Songwriting at BIMM Institute in Brighton, so over the last two years, I’ve had the space to not only grow as a musician but as a person too, a lot of which can be seen in the new music I have coming out this year!

Q: What makes you love what you do? How long have you been making music? Would you call it your passion?

A: Songwriting has always been a solace for me as it’s the way that I process my emotions and events that happen in my life. I can look back in my songbook and pinpoint a moment/memory that I wrote the song about, almost like a journal, which I think keeps it as this super personal thing to me, but the fact I get to share these thoughts and feelings with other people now too is what I love so much. As we live in a technical age now, I love connecting with people all over the world on social media who are just starting to discover my music and being able to relate to it in their own way. When I released my debut single “Hold On” I was really humbled at all the lovely messages and comments I got from people who said the song got them through their breakup or struggles in their relationship, which really warmed my heart as my main aim with my music has always been to connect and be vulnerable. My parents have always encouraged me to “do what you love and love what you do”. Even now writing and making music every day, the burning passion is still there, and despite it being tiring and hard work, especially when you’re independent, I’m so grateful that I get to call this my job!

Q: What are some accomplishments or milestones you’ve reached lately?

A: I’ve just got out of the studio finishing the last tracks for my debut EP, which has been a milestone I’ve wanted to reach for so long! From writing the songs to getting into the studio, to the finishing touches, it’s been a year-long process that feels so gratifying to finish! We wanted each and every song to be ‘perfect’ (if perfect is reachable!); but my producer Scoop Monty and I ended up going on a journey of experimenting with sounds, discovering and defining what “Darcey Hope” was going to sound like. We’ve developed a really great team and I think you are going to love what we’ve made! Announcements will be coming very soon, so all I can say now is to keep your eyes and ears open!

A: Autumn Sky is a heartwarming love song all about appreciating the little things in life. It actually all started with a photo I saw on Pinterest that inspired me to write about my childhood bedroom. Whilst writing it, I ended up going on a very nostalgic journey and the song became a love letter to my childhood and the special people in my life who I deeply cherish, and I hope listeners will feel the same as I do when they hear it.

Q: Do you have any advice for someone who is starting out in the music industry?

A: One of the best lessons I’ve learned is that it’s okay to take your time! As hard as it is, try not to compare other people’s successes with what stage you may be at. Even now sometimes I think “oh I should be doing xyz” and as independent artists we feel this immense pressure to be successful quickly, go viral on TikTok, be a global sensation before we’re 25, but everyone has their own path in this world and I’m a very firm believer in everything happens for a reason. I’m lucky to be surrounded by an amazing community of like-minded musicians and creatives, who all look out for each other and support one another in our work, and that makes everything really worth it.

Q: What do you want our readers to know about you and your music?

A: I’m a very nostalgic person and I try to make my listeners feel the same way. My music is a blend of folk, pop and country, and always write with the intention of being honest, heartfelt and emotionally connecting with people who listen to my music! It’s definitely for fans of Lizzy Mcalpine (her new album Five Seconds Flat though OMG!), Taylor Swift, especially if you’re in your ‘evermore’ era, Dodie, Kacey Musgraves and Phoebe Bridgers.

Autumn Sky is out now, and there’s also a music video coming for it too! It’s the next track off of my debut EP, which will be coming out very soon. If you want to keep up with releases/announcements, my socials are linked below!
