Gilmore Girls, the iconic 2000’s show, has become a host for much nostalgia over the decade due to its charming humor, its cozy feel and even its fashion sense. Gilmore Girls takes place in the quaint, fictional town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut, following the life of Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter, Rory Gilmore. Lorelai is a single mother who had Rory as a young teen, and the show follows Rory throughout her adolescence as she navigates school, familial relationships, friendships and romantic relationships.

Temperatures in Connecticut can be quite cold depending on the season, and mild in the summers. The lowest temperatures reported in the winter are about 19℉, while the lowest in the fall is usually around 41℉. This, of course, is in reference to temperatures currently in Connecticut, but in comparison to the state’s temperatures in the 2000’s, not much has changed. This is why many of the characters within Gilmore Girls can be found layering their clothes with sweaters, long coats, jackets, long sleeves and pants more often than not. The setting of the show is crucial to its fashion and is heavily influenced by it.

Recently, people have been posting on TikTok about their attempts to find the “Rory Gilmore Sweater” in preparation for fall. It’s a white, knitted and oversized sweater that people have been trying to find replicates of in order to recreate the cozy look. Let’s get into some Rory Gilmore outfit ideas.

Oversized Sweaters & Cardigans

Rory Gilmore’s closet is full of oversized cardigans and sweaters; they’re comfy, stylish and perfect for the climate of Connecticut. They can easily be paired with any kind of shirt, and look good styled with either a skirt or jeans. They are also perfect for fall weather and fashion as they create an effortlessly chill and relaxed look.

Besides jeans, skirts are another piece of clothing that are perfect for the fall. The weather’s not too hot, not too cold, but just right. The mildness of fall allows you to wear what you want without worrying about how you’ll fare in the weather based on your outfits. Rory is not a stranger to styling skirts with her outfits, and you can stylize them further by wearing dark tights or long socks with them. You could even wear leg warmers as well.

When you wake up in the morning and there’s a bit of a chill in the air, a light jacket is perfect for combatting just that. It’s not cold enough for a thick one yet, but a cute, stylish one can do just the job. For the chilly temperatures of Connecticut, Rory and many other characters can be found sporting thin or thick jackets with their outfits depending on the weather.

2000’s Layering

Something from 2000’s fashion that has recently come back into style is the classic layering of tops. Because of this, a 2000’s film can easily be dated depending on how a character has styled their t-shirts. Camisoles underneath long sleeves, a long sleeve underneath a t-shirt or a tank top layered over another t-shirt are just some of the classics from the decade. With the resurgence of the look, people are realizing just how much character can be added to an outfit depending on how you layer your pieces. In addition to Gilmore Girls, another franchise that sports this look is Twilight, and with its current revival paired with Y2K nostalgia, people are trying more than ever to recreate this iconic 2000’s look.
