Stanley 40-ounce tumblers went viral last year on TikTok. It seemed like everyone was getting one and raving about them. The part they were leaving out was that it retails for $45. Due to the price tag, many companies took the opportunity to make their own cheaper version. If you’re in a TJ Maxx and go to the water bottle section you can see this, but even though a lot of models are similar, are they truly a dupe?
What is a dupe?
The term dupe has been changed from its original meaning to fool into a good thing. This term is now slang and used to say a product is comparable to a more expensive version. It is commonly used amount the beauty community when comparing high-end makeup to drugstore makeup. At the beginning of the year, there were a ton of people on TikTok using the term dupe while walking through stores to show items that were similar to popular brands. To me, a dupe has to be almost exactly like the item it was based on in order for it to be a real dupe. For example, in the beauty community, they will do one side of the face with high-end makeup and then the other side of their face using the dupes. If you can’t tell which side is which, that’s when you have a real dupe.
Comparing features of each tumbler: Stanley vs. Reduce
Now, is the Reduce Cup a dupe for the OG Stanley? Let’s compare. The Stanley 40-ounce tumbler is called “THE QUENCHER H2.0 FLOWSTATE™ TUMBLER | 40 OZ”. This cup retails for $45 dollars. It comes in a lot of colors, some are seasonal and some are limited edition. It has a large handle that fits around your hand completely. The top has a straw hole that can be rotated to expose a regular coffee cup hole if you don’t want to use the straw. It also seals around your straw to prevent spills. It is BPA-free and has double-wall vacuum insulation so keep your cold drinks cold and your hot drinks hot. Their website claims that the tumbler keeps hot drinks hot for 7 hours, cold drinks cold for 11 hours and iced drinks stay iced for 2 days. It fits in car cup holders and is dishwasher safe. The bottom of the cup is 3.1 inches in diameter.
The Reduce 40-ounce tumbler is called “40 OZ COLD1 TUMBLER WITH HANDLE”. This cup retails for $24.99, but these cups are often at TJ Maxx and Marshalls for less. The Reduce website doesn’t list its specs, but I was able to find them on Target’s website. The lid has their trademark “Sip-It-Your-Way” design. The straw is in the middle, unlike the Stanley which is on the edge. There is a plug for the straw opening if you want to use it like a normal coffee cup. The handle is open at the bottom. This tumbler also has dual-wall vacuum insulation and the Target website says it keeps drinks cold for up to 40 hours. This cup is also BPA-free and dishwasher safe. The bottom of the cup is 3.25 inches in diameter and has a tapered design.
My take
Is the Reduce Tumbler a dupe of the Stanley Tumbler? Yes and no. In terms of keeping drinks hot and cold, they are comparable, but when it comes to functionality the Reduce tumbler falls short. The sizes of the bottom of the cups are different and this has a huge impact on what you can use the cup for. The Stanley is smaller and has fit in every cup holder I have ever put it in. I can’t say the same for the Reduce. It barely fits in the cup holders in the front of the car where there are adjusters to hold it in, but it won’t even go in standard cupholders. If you are looking for a cup to take with you everywhere, get the Stanley. If you want a cup to help you drink more water at home and you don’t need it to fit in cupholders, save your money and get the Reduce.
