Ever Heard Of Nature Folk Pop? Learn All About It In This Q&A With Olivia Frances

This is an interview with Olivia Frances, read her story below! If you, or anyone you know, would like to be highlighted in The Zillennial Zine, shoot us an email at thezillennialzine@gmail.com or DM us on Instagram!

Tell us your story! Where did you begin and how did you reach the caliber you’re currently at?

I’m a multi-award-winning folk-pop singer-songwriter and musician originally from Cincinnati, OH living in Nashville, TN! I started playing piano when I was about 6 years old and then started playing guitar and writing songs when I was 12. I’ve released 3 full-length albums and have been lucky enough to tour across the country and grow my fanbase around the world.

I think I reached the caliber I’m currently at (always trying to reach for the stars!) by continuing to show up to the craft of songwriting, being brave, and by putting in the work of practicing, performing, and posting on social media day in and day out.

What makes you love what you do? How long have you been making music? Would you call it your passion?

Music’s always been part of my DNA. I remember coming home from school and dancing around my family room using the karaoke machine by parents had bought me in elementary school. I’ve always felt called to play, sing, and create music. It has been my passion of mine for a longtime but I’ve also been able to call it a career, working on it daily, always trying to strengthen my music muscle whether it’s by practicing scales, writing for other artists, or livestreaming on TikTok.

What are some accomplishments or milestones you’ve reached lately?

This past fall, my single, “Breathing Room” was up for GRAMMY Consideration for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. I’m honored and thankful for this huge recognition. Also related to “Breathing Room” – it just recently won Gold at the W.A.M Music Awards out of Boston in the Folk/Singer-Songwriter Category. As an artist, it can be easy to hear those voices of doubt as some days they’re louder than others. These milestones are both super validating and affirming – I’m so thankful!

Tell us about “Show Me What I’m Looking For”!!

“Show Me What I’m Looking For” is the first cover I’ve ever released. It was originally recorded by Carolina Liar and came out in 2009. I had toyed with the idea of recording a cover song in the past but was determined that 2023 would be the year I actually did it! I chose to make my own rendition to this song in particular because I’ve always loved it on a personal level. It’s emotional, it’s beautiful, it’s really a plea to the universe in song form. I’m excited it’s out for all the world to hear!

Do you have any advice for someone who is starting music?

Dive in! Write a song by yourself. Write a song with someone else. Write a song with two other people in the same room. Practice singing and playing your favorite songs. Study the chord structure, the lyrics, the rhyme scheme. Always follow your heart and do what brings you joy.

What do you want our readers to know about you and your music?

I like to refer to my music as nature folk pop because I’m really inspired by the beauty of the world around us, love to tell stories, and love the catchiness of pop. I’m inspired by Maggie Rogers, Florence and the Machine, and Stevie Nicks, so if you like any of those artists, you might like my music! 🙂
