As April progresses, movie enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the arrival of an upcoming movie, Challengers set to grace screens on April 26th. With a tantalizing blend of action, drama, and suspense, this highly anticipated film promises to captivate audiences and leave a lasting impression.
So what’s the Challengers movie plot?
The tantalizing tennis drama from Luca Guadagnino, the filmmaker behind “Call Me By Your Name,” features the ever-popular Zendaya, known for her role in the MCU Spider-Man franchise, as Tashi Duncan. Duncan, a former tennis sensation turned coach, finds herself entangled in a passionate love triangle between her athlete husband and one of his competitors.
Originally slated for release in 2023, the highly anticipated film was postponed due to the prolonged SAG-AFTRA strike that gripped Hollywood. However, the long-awaited wait for Challengers is finally drawing to a close, much to the delight of fans who have been eagerly anticipating its arrival.
Fresh off their press in Australia, many reviews have already been posted and so far so good. Trace Sauveur of Austin Chronicle wrote, “Challengers is some real electric character drama. Career-best performances from Zendaya and Faist & O’Connor are no slouches either. The pulsing Reznor/Ross electro score throbs over scenes of dialogue like they’re action sequences. Really alive-feeling movie.”
Additionally, Daniel Howat from Letterboxd wrote, “Challengers is a sweaty, pulse-pounding, love triangle. Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist are undeniable superstars utilized perfectly here. Intense score. Gripping sound work. The story volleys back and forth in time, but brilliant editing keeps the drama high. Really electric.”
Based on some of these responses, one can agree that this movie will be one to watch this upcoming spring and summer season. The chemistry seems undeniable from the three main actors and possibly one of Zendaya’s best performances.
One thing I have noticed in anticipation for the Challengers release, is Zendaya’s red carpet looks for these press releases. A trailblazer in the trend of dressing in accordance with the themes of her films, Zendaya seamlessly transitions from the fantastical realms of Spider-Man and the dystopian landscapes of Dune to the whimsical world of a tennis-themed dramedy. Her inaugural appearance at Sydney’s State Theatre alongside creative partner Law Roach showcased a custom Loewe slip dress, adorned in tennis-green hues, bedazzled embellishments, and featuring a captivating screen grab of a player in mid-serve. It came as no shock that Jonathan Anderson, the visionary behind Loewe, served as the inspiration for the press tour; after all, he also served as the costume designer for Challengers.
Before a photocall set against the picturesque backdrop of Sydney Harbour, Zendaya donned her interpretation of classic tennis whites: a cropped tank paired with men’s style briefs and a netted maxi skirt courtesy of Lacoste. Her fashion journey continued in Paris, where she effortlessly blended pieces from Louis Vuitton’s rich history, a brand for which she serves as an ambassador. Sporting a preppy ’60s short coat adorned with a green and white checkerboard pattern, Zendaya accessorized with a headband and styled her hair in a chic blonde beehive—a nod to the house’s spring/summer 2013 collection. Continuing the retro-chic theme, she donned a silken button-up and matching trousers from Louis Vuitton’s spring/summer 1999 presentation before stealing the show at the city’s premiere in a custom strapless gown, resplendent in brilliant white and adorned with a wide, criss-cross belt around the hips.
These looks exuded retro charm while maintaining a minimalistic aesthetic, perfectly capturing the essence of a card-carrying country club member. Zendaya’s ability to embody the spirit of the film through her wardrobe choices underscores the seamless synergy between style and sport in the world of Challengers. In the realm of method dressing, Zendaya consistently proves herself ready to play the game.
