The show Friends is one that many of us are familiar with. The older Zillennials and Millennials may have grown up with it. The younger Zillennials and Gen Z probably watched it on Netflix or Max years later. As I was rewatching Friends for the third time now, I started to notice some of the outfits worn by the characters. Many looked like outfits that we see people wear today. With the Y2K and 90s styles coming back, here are some fits in Friends that I think would fit right in in today’s time:
Mini skirt and high boots
There was no doubt that Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) was a fashion icon during the time the show was filmed. From her hair to her outfits, everyone wanted to be Rachel. She was the girl that worked at Bloomingdales and Ralph Lauren.
This fit is very much something you’d see in New York. The pleated short skirt is very popular right now. Brands like Garage, Aerie, Abercrombie and Urban Outfitters all currently have their own versions of this.
The knee length boots is also something that I feel is still very popular today. And it certainly is still styled with short skirts. Black is, and always will be, a timeless color. It’s basic and can be mixed and matched very easily. This outfit by Rachel is timeless.
Small top big pants
The small top big pants combo by Monica here is such a staple in today’s fashion. This combination is the backbone of going out outfits. The baby tee is still very “in” today. It’s a basic that can be styled every which way.
The wider, looser pants is also something we have come to embrace in recent years. After the skinny jeans craze died down, mom jeans, dad jeans, straight legged pants, etc became extremely popular. This combination can be styled so many different ways and for so many occasions. Even 30 years later, we are still rocking this look and outfit combination.
The trenchcoat
Throughout the seasons, Joey pulled together some amazing looks as well. This one for example. The trenchcoat is another item of clothing that has become very popular recently. Many brands have since come out with their own. This is another piece that I think is pretty timeless. We see it in various decades, though, styled a bit differently of course.
Frat core
When we think of Chandler we usually think of ‘transpondser’, funny and maybe a little clumsy. However, in this particular photo, Chandler reflects today’s frat boy image. The backwards hat with a button down is something I see guys in college wear very often. Especially if they’re in Greek life. The backwards hat with a button down or collar shirt is the epitome of today’s frat boy image.
Oversized blazer
Rachel’s oversized blazer outfit is making a comeback. With the rise of “corporate girl” culture and Gen Z women entering the workforce trying to add some of their personal style to their work attire. This fit reminds me very much of when Millennials used to style and wear blazers out to social settings. That trend is making a comeback too. The big outer layer with shorts or a skirt underneath has been a very popular style choice for years now. In a way, Rachel Greene has inspired us all.
Fur coat
Phoebe’s style throughout the show has always been very free spirited, just like her personality. This image of her wearing a fur coat with what seems like a long dress or skirt underneathe. This is definitely a fit you would see in a big city. I can imagine this being worn today in cities like LA or New York City.
