If you’re anything like me you’ve had your Halloween costume planned since August. However, sometimes it takes a little bit longer to get all the finer details ironed out. I’m talking about the accessories that bring a look together, but also the hair and makeup that you pair with it. There’s a reason we all go crazy for celebrity Halloween costumes each year. They always go all out, and it’s their makeup and hair–along with the custom dresses or worm costumes–that bring their looks to a new level. Hair and makeup is hard though. Personally, my arms get tired just blow drying my hair. Not to worry though, here are some hair and Halloween makeup easy ideas to hack your Halloween.
Trace, Trace, Trace
Makeup is an art. It’s hard enough to draw on paper, much less on yourself. Personally, I’m no artist. I’ve always considered myself a professional tracer though. The TikTok makeup girlies understand, and they’re using everything from forks to create scratch marks, to toothpicks to create the skull mouth effect. The most popular use of tracing seems to be in clown makeup with a harlequin pattern above the eyes, and lines drawn out from the lips to accentuate a smile. Here’s a step-by step guide of how you can achieve this and other Halloween makeup easy ideas.
Depending on the shape of the harlequin pattern, you can dip either an eyelash curler (my personal favorite), or a toothpick into setting powder. Then, apply the edge dipped in powder over the eyebrow twice to create a triangular shape. The powder will leave you with a guide to trace when you’re ready to go in with eyeliner or face paint. To create a small circle on the nose, use the lid of an eye pencil or even a pen cap. Repeat the process of creating a guide using the powder and then filling in the shape. Finally, use eyeliner to extend the corner of your lips. You could totally use a toothpick and powder to create a guide for this, or just freehand it.
Temporary Tattoos in Hair
This is one of the hair and Halloween makeup easy ideas I will definitely be trying out. Hair tattoos are their own thing, and they’ve had their moments at festivals or emulating edges and eyebrows. But over the last few years and more recently creators have been turning to normal temporary tattoos as the latest way to spice up a slicked hairstyle. For the best results, longest wear, and easiest removal, you will want to apply a wax stick to the hair before adding the tattoos. From there, you just apply the tattoos like normal by removing the plastic and wetting the paper once you’ve placed it. It is possible to apply the tattoos on non-slicked hair, but just be aware the design might break apart if the hair separates.
Will You Wear Wigs: Wig Tips
If you need a specific hair color or style and you don’t want to use spray on hair color, or just don’t trust your own styling abilities, wigs are a great alternative. Wigs might seem intimidating, but it just takes some practice learning how to get them to sit right on you. I have fond memories of my mom donning a long Rapunzel wig at one point during my childhood, but the first time I tried to put on a wig for a costume, I was shocked at how it didn’t just magically fit on my head. Don’t let that discourage you though, there are plenty of tips and tricks you can use to make wigs your new best friend for halloween costumes.
First, a stylish wig takes prep before you’re ready to put it on your head. You’re going to want to do a full brush through of your wig when you take it out of its packaging. Don’t brush so deep as to catch the netting, but spend some time gently working out all the tangles. If the wig is curled and you want to help loosen the coils, a steamer can be used to relax the wig hairs. One thing that takes away from your costume sometimes is how shiny the wigs can be. This is an easy fix. Apply dry shampoo liberally after brushing the wig and then follow up with another brush through to take out some of the shine and make the wig look more hair-like.
When you’re finally ready to put the wig on, make sure to use a wig cap! If you have long hair like me, you might wonder how all your locks will fit under the wig without looking ridiculous. Be sure to braid your hair on either side and then pin the braids against your head so the hair lays as flat as possible. This will allow your wig to rest nicely on your head. Finally, finish off by using hair spray on your brush when you comb through to tame any flyaways.
Spooky-ish Makeup
Don’t want to go all-out this year? Try a generically spooky eye look like this ghost eye look. Use a cotton swab and white face paint or eye makeup to make the ghost’s body, then use a fine-tipped brush to make the tail and arms. Finally, add eyes and a mouth with eyeliner. You can also make the ghosts sparkle by pressing some shimmer eyeshadow on top.
Another option for a vampire inspired look is to add veins under the eyes like in The Vampire Diaries. First, accentuate the shadows underneath the eyes using a purple or burgundy eyeshadow. Follow this with either red or purple shadow applied in zig zag lines down from the lower lash line. You can add white eyeshadow as well to add contrast. Finish off by patting the applied lines with your fingers to make them less harsh.
If you want a really low key makeup look, you could always try Beetlejuice lips. Check out our article for a step by step guide on how to achieve this easy Halloween look.
