Two weeks ago my inbox flooded with texts from friends from every phase of life. College roommates, high school friends, and even my current work girlies group chat all converged bringing the same news. Liam Payne had died. My knee-jerk reaction was to verify via Twitter. It turned out, the rest of the world was experiencing the same thing. Directioners from all generations crawled out of the woodwork to see if the news was true. I remember the messages being a mixture of anguished sorrow over the loss of someone so foundational to a period of their lives, while also being critical of the messages being spread about Payne given the choices he made in his personal life and how his passing was affecting those that he had hurt. Two things can be true at once. It has taken time for me and many others to grapple with that. Liam Payne’s death has brought beautiful Liam Payne fan tributes and renewal of the One Direction fandom. It has also brought criticism of inhuman media practices. In this article, I attempt to parse through the conflicting emotions and information.
What Happened
Liam Payne died after falling from his third-story hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina on October 16th. He had traveled to South America to support fellow One Direction bandmate, Niall Horan, who was on tour there. Payne had been vacationing with his current girlfriend, Kate Cassidy. One of the earliest reports of Payne’s death came from TMZ, which corroborated the assertion using pictures of the singer’s tattoos visible from where he’d landed. The sharing of these partial photos online sparked outrage among fans and other musicians who were shocked by the insensitivity of the media outlet.
The Argentinian police announced that Payne fainted before falling and was found with multiple drugs in his system. Payne had been open in the past about his struggle with addiction. He had recently been thought to have been doing better. An investigation has been opened to determine the nature of his death with updates continuing to be released daily.
Payne left behind his seven-year-old son, Bear, who he had with Cheryl Cole and his current girlfriend Kate Cassidy. His parents Karen and Geoff and two older sisters also survive him. Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik have each also released their own statements following his passing.
Liam Payne Fan Tributes
Since the news broke, fans all around the globe have held self-organized vigils for the musician. From Easton, Pennsylvania to Sydney Australia, London, and Buenos Aires. At these Liam Payne fan tributes, fans lit candles, deposited letters, brought photos and cardboard cutouts of Payne, and–of course–sang One Direction songs as well as Payne’s solo discography. In the weeks following his death, all five of One Direction’s albums reentered the Billboard Top 200. The group’s song “Night Changes” even peaked at number six on the Spotify charts at one point.
Pre-Death Controversy
The devastation over Payne’s passing exists in tandem with criticism of his character while he was alive. Two days before October 16th, ex-fiance Maya Henry made an appearance on a podcast. On the podcast, she shared that Payne had become abusive after they were engaged. This was not the first time that Henry had been vocal about problems in her and Payne’s relationship. The two dated on and off from 2018 to 2020 until announcing their engagement before finally splitting in 2022 after several breaks during 2021. Henry had also taken legal action against Payne in the form of a cease and desist for repeatedly contacting her and those close to her.
Since his passing, some fans have taken it upon themselves to flock to Henry’s social channels to pay tribute in the form of blaming Henry for Payne’s death. She spoke about their relationship numerous times on her social media platforms since their split and even released a book earlier this year that is based on many of her experiences with the One Direction star. Comments on Henry’s Instagram have been limited since the event and disallowed from her TikTok.
For as many hate comments as Henry has received since Payne’s passing though, there have been just as many outcries of support. Henry has not made a statement since Payne’s death.
Liam’s Law
One thing that most people seem to agree on following Payne’s death, is the disgusting way it has been handled by the media. While it has sparked outrage, it also started discussions on the treatment and privacy that stars– especially young stars– deserve. Perhaps one of the most impactful Liam Payne fan tributes has come in the form of a digital petition. Following Payne’s death, a fan started a petition on Change.org. The petition advocates and urges the UK Parliament to propose legislation to support young stars’ mental health. According to the Daily Mail, Liam’s Law would safeguard mental health by ensuring regular mental health checks and adequate rest periods for stars.
The petition comes in the wake of other conversations surrounding the demands of stardom. Chappell Roan has vehemently asserted that her schedule is often too overwhelming and has been unapologetic in canceling commitments when it becomes too much. The star has met backlash from this, but also praise for prioritizing her wellbeing amidst her intense rise to fame. The Liam’s Law petition currently has more than 130,000 signatures. The Daily Mail reported that after 110,000 signatures the petition would be debated in Parliament. It is unclear if it has been brought to Parliament members or will ever become legitimate legislation.
My Two Cents
It’s okay to have varying feelings regarding Payne’s death. If I’m being totally honest, I feel like it hasn’t fully hit me yet. For so many millennials and Gen Z like myself, One Direction was a crux of my adolescence, and Payne’s death feels like a monumental thing. In situations like these, it feels like there’s a pressure to pick between mourning or siding with the victim. The argument of whether you can separate an artist and their art comes to mind. I’ve always found those choices limiting.
Many sources have reported on the nuance that fans are taking into account when thinking about this devastating loss of life. It’s encouraging to see. You can recognize Payne’s actions while he was alive alongside the joy he brought to so many. It’s okay to have complicated feelings. My heart goes out to his parents, son, bandmates, friends, and all that he touched. It also goes out to those he may have hurt.
