2025 is just around the corner and everyone is locking in their plans to celebrate. Some are ready to dance their way into the new year with a party, others prepping for a wild night on the town with their friends, and some couples are settling in for an intimate date and lucky kiss at midnight. But not everyone enjoys plans like that. I’ve always thought New Year’s Eve was too loud of a holiday. So, if you’re like me and maybe you’re not in the party mood or you just hate fireworks. There’s still plenty of things you can do at home to celebrate. So here are 8 New Year’s at home ideas to celebrate!
8: Animal Crossing
Animal Crossing always has an event for New Year’s Eve. It begins on December 31st (as it’s supposed to), complete with a countdown and everything. The festivities begin at 7PM, but things really kick off at 11:30PM. You can get special decor, clothes, and recipes. It’s a great way to have a quiet party with their villagers and players you love. Not to mention the fireworks are exactly how you want them to be. I always like to watch from the top of the map. Everyone’s favorite cozy game may have the party for you.
7: Game Night
Board games and card games are the staple of New Year’s at home ideas. Obviously, this is one best spent with friends and family (unless you have single-player games). Everyone gets to bring their favorite game, plan ahead so everyone gets a turn. Be sure to have plenty of snacks and pick the best game for the countdown. No offense if it’s your favorite not a lot of people want to argue over Monopoly as the calendar changes. But if you’re one of the ones that do, then I actually support that energy.
6: Bake Cookies (& More!)
Who says cookies are just for Christmas? Other desserts are welcome, so let’s have a sweet treat for the new year. Have a baking party with by yourself or with your loved ones. You can just make your favorite recipe or try a whole lot of new ones. You can get creative with icing, sprinkles, or other edible decorations. Spend one half of the night baking and the other half eating. You could add a twist of a competition and rank the cookies. You may have a new favorite by the end of the night!
5: Time Capsule
Time capsules are a special way to commemorate old memories. The end/beginning of a new year is the perfect time to create your own. While many wait 10, 20, 50, or even 100 years to open them. You could gather your favorite memories of 2024 and put them in the time capsule. Or you can start when the clock strikes 12, you could begin your 2025 memories. You can decide however long you want to wait to open your capsule, but you’d have to keep adding those memories. Eventually, when you open it, you’ll take a nice trip down memory lane.
4: Self-Care Night
If you want a calm and relaxing new year’s, self-care is the way to go. There are so many New Year’s at home ideas that can get wrapped up in self-care. Think of what self-care means to you, and maybe others, and prepare for your celebration. This could mean an at-home spa night, eat your favorite dinner/dessert, watch your favorite movie or tv show, and maybe try some journaling. You could put your resolutions for the next year next to your thoughts on the year you’re leaving behind. Center yourself this New Year’s Eve.
3: Puzzle Night
Could be a combo of self-care night and game night, but you might spend the entire evening on one puzzle. Get a huge puzzle. One you can dedicate enough time from one year to the next. The number of pieces depends on how much of a puzzle master you are or whether you’re with friends. If you’re spending the night by yourself, you could aim high and push your solving skills to the limit. Alternatively, if you’re with friends you could make a game out of it. Get a few puzzles and a timer. Everyone works on one puzzle until the timer goes off. That’s when everyone switches and works on a new one. Whatever way you play, I recommend saving the puzzle with a frame so you could save that memory for years to come.
2: Binge Night
Binge your way into the new year with a TV or movie marathon. It could be your favorite, something new you’re dying to try, or a franchise that you’ve only seen part of. Plenty of opportunities to go from the old to the new. If you organize, you could even follow the trend where your favorite line, scene, or moment happens at exactly midnight. Additionally, if you are watching something that celebrates New Year’s celebration in it, time it so you are rejoicing along with the characters. A new year in a real world and a fictional one.
1: Create Your Own Ball Drop
Crafts are always good for some New Year’s at home ideas. It’s also a great jump start on any crafting-based resolutions, but we still need to make it fit this holiday’s theme. The only solution is to create your own ball drop. It’s the biggest part of any New Year’s Eve celebration! So, let it be the biggest part in your celebration. Gather all the supplies you need to make your bright, shiny, and joyful ball and hopefully 2025 will be just the same. You can repurpose old soccer or basketballs, a Styrofoam ball, or whatever you think you can use to make a ball. A balloon is also a good choice, but you might need to be careful about decorations. You know you’ll need glitter, rhinestones, stickers, confetti, and anything else that’s eye-catching. If you’re celebrating with others, you could have a big crafting night, and everyone can drop their New Year’s Eve balls together!
What Can You do at Home for New Year’s?
Anything you want! There is no one right way to have a New Year’s Eve party at home. You could have a wild party with all your friends with drinking, dancing, and loud music or you can have a wild party of puzzles, cookies, and Monopoly. I don’t know your definition of wild, so I can’t speak for you. Only you know how you want to ring in the New Year, so celebrate 2024 being over whichever way you want. I only hope I could give you some ideas. Happy 2025!
