Can You Make Money Flipping Furniture? You Totally Can! 6 Steps To Success

can you make money flipping furniture

Chances are, you’ve been on Pinterest or TikTok and you’ve seen a crafty individual take what once was a sad-looking piece of Goodwill furniture and flipped it into a gorgeous designer dresser or side table or chair or whatever. While it may look like wizardry, upcycling furniture is something anyone can do with the right resources, creativity, and tools! If the ease of most of these flips doesn’t sell you on attempting to upcycle furniture yourself, perhaps the payout might. Flipping furniture is more than just a hobby, it can be a legitimate and profitable side hustle if you play your cards right. So, how do you hop onto this side hustle sensation? Can you make money flipping furniture? Well, for starters, you’ll need to read this article because I’ve gathered some of the best advice for starting a furniture-flipping side hustle.

Step 1: Find Your Furniture

There are TONS of places you can be looking for furniture to flip; Facebook Marketplace, a local thrift store, yard sales, or even on the side of the road. In my opinion, I feel like the trick to making the most profit is when you try to find furniture that’s on its last leg or that’s just plain dirt cheap. Have you ever been to a thrift store and thought “I don’t need a new tv stand, but if I did I’d buy this one because it’s only $5” or something like that? I have those kinds of thoughts all the time. Why not take advantage of that cheap tv stand and make it into something that will actually make you money? Or, next time you see some furniture that’s barely holding together on the side of the road, stop to assess it and see if you can fix it up or turn it into something more valuable. Seeing the potential in items is the kind of lens you need to be carrying around at all times if you want to furniture flip for profit.

Step 2: Find Your Materials

OK, so you have your furniture, and chances are you have a pretty good idea of what you might want to do with it. Now the question is how. How are you going to make your image of how this flip will go turn into a reality? Well, you really need the knowledge and tools for this specific project in order to likely make good money from it. So, go ahead and do your research! It’s better informed than sorry! If you don’t know how to stain wood, consider watching a YouTube video before just going at it, maybe the instructor in the video will have tips on what kind of stain to buy or the technique you should be using. It’s always key that you aren’t being sloppy with this furniture flip, so make sure you have everything you need so that you aren’t cutting corners.

Step 3: Flip it!

Alright, now comes the fun part! Blast your favorite album in your garage or your yard and get to work! Take your time, and enjoy the process! This will make the end result that much more amazing! Another important thing to note is that safety is a huge concern when flipping furniture! Make sure to get help if you’re moving something very large or heavy, and wear clothes that you’re protected from tools, debris, or even chemicals in paint or stain. If your project requires sharp tools, it’s a good idea to wear safety glasses. If your project uses spray paint or something else with harmful fumes, you should probably consider wearing a face mask. Just be smart about your safety! You don’t want your furniture flip paying for your hospital bill.

Step 4: Style It + Snap It

Once your furniture flip is complete, it’s time to snap some pictures for any potential buyers. In order to make any real money with this furniture flip, chances are you won’t be able to pull out your phone and use the first pictures you take of your flip. Instead, I suggest you style the furniture so that you get the best picture possible. This way, a potential buyer can picture the piece in use, sitting in their own home, instead of resting in your garage in poor lighting. Add a plant, candle, picture, or something that dresses the furniture up a little bit, and make sure you have bright natural light showing off how great the furniture looks. Make sure when you decide to snap your pics, you’re getting the piece from all important angles, this way, no guesswork is required of your buyers.

Step 5: Find Your Platform

Once you have the piece done and the pics taken, you’ll need to find a way to actually sell your flipped furniture. Hopping back onto Facebook Marketplace is a great idea, but there are tons of other places you can find buyers for your flipped furniture. Etsy and Craigslist are other awesome online platforms to share your flipped furniture on. Get your pictures up on your platform of choice– or on multiple platforms– and write up a detailed description of the product, making sure to use words you think people will be searching for.

Step 6: Pick Your Price

Here’s where I can’t help you as much. It’s up to you to determine what you think this product is worth. You can take the original price, the materials, and your time into account, but go with your gut! If it seems like a price is too high that you’re not sure anyone would even buy it, consider pricing it high at first then lowering the price the longer the product is up. If a price seems like too good of a deal for a buyer, don’t limit your profit. Price it how you feel is right!
