Everyone likes to feel a little sun-kissed for summer, don’t you agree? No matter the natural color of your hair, we have you covered for the summer version of yourself! You don’t necessarily have to be blonde to be sun-kissed! Just going a shade or two lighter than your natural hair color is all you need to do! In fact, less is more for the sun-kissed look. It’s about keeping it natural like the sun did all the work! Think back to when you were a little kid and played outside or when you went to the pool. Your hair was lighter in the front and around the edges, the way the sun would lighten it for you. As we get older, a lot of people’s hair grows in a little darker and those “babylights” tend to go away. If you’re wanting to brighten up your summer look without making a drastic change, sun kissed highlights are perfect.
Sun Kissed Highlights
Ask your stylist for just a partial face-framing or a halo technique for the highlights. Do not over highlight, I repeat DO NOT over highlight! That will defeat the effortless, cool girl summer look! Put the emphasis on the front, money piece face-framing foils and the ends of your hair, leaving the crown darker. For each hair color, this process might look a little different.
Black/Dark Brown Hair
For very dark hair, remember we are not trying to get blonde here, just sun kissed. Aiming for a medium brown is perfect! If your stylist frames the face and ends, that will be all you need. Leave your natural depth at the crown for ultra-low maintenance, so you don’t have to go back to touch up your roots over and over!
Medium Brown Hair
For those with medium brown hair, the same principles apply. Stay just a couple of levels lighter than your natural shade. Just think, could the sun have done this? Here are a few examples that show the perfect amount of highlighting, in order for you to achieve the sun kissed look of your dreams.
Light Brown/Dirty Blonde
For the light brown or dirty blonde crowd, try these looks. Once again, you don’t want to over highlight because you want it to look as natural as possible! Although, now we are getting closer to blonde highlights than the previous options.
Redheads
If you are one of the lucky and rare natural redheads, aim for a medium warm and golden blonde. Don’t have your stylist go too ashy with it, because you will want your new highlighted strands to replicate your natural warmth.
Blondes
If you are a blonde, chances are your childhood blonde has darkened. This is the group that can go the lightest with their highlights while still keeping it looking natural.
We hope this guide has helped you! Head on over to your salon and show the appropriate examples to your stylist and have a sun-kissed summer babes! Do you love sun kissed highlights like we do? Let us know in the comments below!
