It’s that time of the year, hot girl summer has returned. Despite its title, anybody can have a hot girl summer, it’s a mentality. Megan Thee Stallion dropped her song Hot Girl Summer at the end of Summer 2019, ever since people have been discussing the rules and definitions behind the concept. My hot girl summer is defined by one thing: the bettering of myself. Last summer I broke up with a long-term boyfriend in June and I didn’t get the hang of my hot girl summer until late August, but this year I came prepared. So, how do you have a hot girl summer? Here are the five action steps you can take to guarantee a hot girl summer.

Have a Dialogue With Yourself

Having a dialogue with yourself can take place in a variety of forms. For me, it’s journaling. The first step of hot girl summer is personal growth, meaning you have to dive into your psyche a bit. In the summer I find myself with more alone time and an inconsistent schedule, a recipe for mental spiraling. Keeping a journal of my thoughts, answering prompts, or even just writing out daily goals and itineraries keeps me mentally present. Other self-dialogues could be creating mind maps, making art, trying out therapy or even just setting aside time to talk to the mirror. The important thing is to make sure you are recognizing and experiencing your emotions.

Setting physical goals never works for me. I set rules about how much I should be going to the gym and what to eat, but when I fall short I feel worse than before. I stopped thinking of health as a physical challenge and transitioned it into a mental one. My mental gains include reading books, listening to mentality podcasts, and spending time in the sunshine. When you spend time on your mental gains, the physical ones follow. Having a hot girl summer should be a positive growth experience, not a superficial checklist.

This is the best advice I can give you, once a day you have to dance for at LEAST 5 minutes. This can be at the club or in the mirror, but 5 minutes of dancing changes my attitude faster than anything else. It’s the body’s expression of fun energy, when you put out fun energy the universe will send it back to you. By guaranteeing these 5 minutes of vivacity to yourself, you’ll start to see it manifest in other areas of your life.
