If you know and love the cottage core and coastal grandmother aesthetics, allow me to introduce you to the grandpa summer trend. Also known as the grandpa clothes aesthetic, this trend combines the vintage feel of cottage core and the domestic comforts of the beach grandma aesthetic for a laid-back, low-key summer. This has been one of my favorite summer trends, and my friends have enjoyed participating in my grandpa living. If you’d like to know more about this trend, read on!
Here is a step-by-step guide to relax into your inner grandpa this summer.
Grandpa summer outfits
To get into the proper grandpa summer mood, you’ll need an outfit that fits into the grandpa clothes aesthetic. Think vintage business casual but looser fitting. If you feel like a cute old man who’s just settling home after his nine-to-five with a bouquet for his wife, then you’re doing it right! The work jacket and tie are off, it’s time for a nice glass of iced tea in front of a fan. Some stapes to these outfits include oversized or wide-leg trouser shorts, polo shirts and sweater vests. Argyle patterns in tans, navy and other neutral colors are a perfect touch! Finish off the outfit with thin crew socks, loafers, a belt and chunky rings. I’ve had the best luck finding items that fit the grandpa clothes aesthetic at thrift stores. Estate sales and yard sales can also be great places to find vintage accessories like class rings, wallets, sunglasses, fanny packs and handbags. These delightful outfits can be deceivingly dressy because their loose fit makes them comfortable both outside in the heat and inside with air conditioning.
Grandpa summer activities
Now that you’ve embraced the grandpa look, it’s time to find some activities! To fit the grandpa summer aesthetic, take up some typical grandpa hobbies. If you plan to live the grandpa aesthetic solo, you can take up things like reading, puzzles, and card games. Learn how to shuffle cards and play solitaire. My favorite activity under this trend has been playing sudoku. I picked up a couple of sudoku books from a dollar store and I keep them around to solve whenever I am bored or want some screen-free time. They are small and compact, so I keep one in my car, one on my nightstand, and another in my mini backpack. My friends and family laugh endearingly whenever they see me pull one out.
If you’re taking up this trend with friends, there are plenty of things to do together. Not only are multi-player card games fun for your grandpa-core group, but board games are also a nice activity. Invite your friends over regularly to play them together. As mentioned before, puzzles are also really fun to do with a group!
The Grandpa summer lifestyle
Once these activities have become your beloved hobbies, you’re pretty much living the grandpa summer lifestyle! I make grandpa living a daily practice. I read or play sudoku almost everywhere I go, my friends and I take walks to appreciate nature, and I frequently fall asleep while watching movies in the early evening. But this isn’t all! Keep your mind sharp by investing in your local newspaper for the crosswords, and you can clip out the funny comics to hang on the fridge. Sit on the porch and complain about the squirrels getting into your bird feeders, and even go fishing every once in a while. Make lots of iced tea and fall asleep on the sofa. And, if you are very ambitious, take up a big project that will almost certainly never be finished, like restoring an old car or creating a massive diorama with miniature trains. For now, I’m going to get back to my sudoku.
