One of my absolute favorite parts about the end of the year is getting to see my Spotify Wrapped, and I’m sure there are a lot of you who feel the same way. Seeing my most streamed songs, genres and artists of the year is so much fun for me, since I’ll always welcome the opportunity to reminisce over my past song obsessions. While Spotify incorporated many new features this year like a “sound town” and a “listening personality,” there are some elements of Wrapped that didn’t come as a surprise to anyone. For me (and probably many of you), that was seeing Taylor Swift as my number one artist. Not only was Taylor my top artist, but it seems that in 2023, she was Spotify’s top artist as well. We love Taylor Swift here at the Zillennial, but if you’re a Swiftie who is looking to branch out a bit, this article might just help you broaden your horizons. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite singers similar to Taylor Swift whose music you should check out (if you haven’t already, that is).
Lizzy McAlpine
Best known for her song “Ceilings,” Lizzy McAlpine brings a level of vulnerability to her music that few other artists can claim. She released her first album Give Me A Minute in 2020, followed by five seconds flat in 2022. Her music contains elements of daydreaming, fantasizing and reminiscing that reminds us a lot of Fearless, Speak Now and Red. Some of our favorite songs include “Pancakes for Dinner,” “doomsday” and “orange show speedway.”
MUNA
If you’re hardcore Taylor Swift fans, you might know MUNA from their time as openers from part of the Eras Tour. If you don’t recognize them from there, maybe you’ve heard their song “Silk Chiffon,” which they created in collaboration with Phoebe Bridgers. They have more of an upbeat, electronic, poppy music style, with a lot of their songs featuring themes of sapphic and queer love. If you’re a 1989 or Midnights fan, you should give them a listen! Our favorite songs of theirs are “What I Want,” “Anything But Me” and “Taken.”
Maisie Peters
If you’re looking to blast a breakup anthem and dance through your heartbreak, Maisie Peters is the artist for you! Her most recent album, The Good Witch features everything from upbeat pop ballads to blast with the windows down to slower, stripped down songs that showcase Maisie’s storytelling capabilities. Her songs remind us simultaneously of Fearless and 1989. Our favorites from that album are “The Band and I,” “Lost the Breakup” and “The Good Witch.”
Natalie Jane
Having just released her first album, Where Am I? this year, Natalie Jane showcases a versatile range in genre in addition to her vocals. The album contains stripped-down emotional ballads, powerful confidence boosters and questions pertaining to finding a person to love. Some of her songs possess the same interiority found in Folklore and Evermore, while others have a commanding energy that reminds us of Reputation. If we had to recommend a few songs from this album, it would be “Intrusive Thoughts,” “If You Died Today” and “I’m Her.”
Flowerovlove
Boosted by her light, airy vocals, flowerovlove’s music is perfect to listen to when you’re in the car, doing homework or just chilling out. Many of her songs have a softer quality to them, occasionally supported by an upbeat rhythm in the background. She bounces between the pop and indie genres and the lyrics in her song “a girl like me” give off major Speak Now energy. We also have to recommend “Next Best Exit” and “Will We Ever Get This Right.”
