If you’re a D.I.Y fanatic like me, you’re always on the hunt for a new project. Something big, that won’t take too much time, or require me to learn complex skills to make. If you have a cat at home, why not try making a cardboard house? They’re cute additions to your cat’s ever-growing collection of toys and look much more aesthetically appealing than just a regular cardboard scratching post. Here is my guide on how to make a cardboard house for cats!
First off, plan what your house will look like. Will it be a miniature version of your own home, or do you want to try to make something like a car or a castle? Plan what you want ahead of time so that you don’t have to worry about your house being too big or too small. For more complex projects, like castles or mazes, draw up a diagram and plan the “rooms” that you will need to make. How many doors should there be? How will they connect?
Want to add a cardboard scratching toy to your creation? Try planning your project so that you can easily remove the house or the scratcher if either needs to be replaced. I would recommend not adding a floor to your project, that way the scratcher can be the house’s floor!
Make sure the doorways are big enough for your cat to fit through! Even though cats are good at squeezing into tight spaces, you want to encourage your cat to use their house whenever they can.
To paint your house, I would recommend anything that’s water-based or even milk-based. Regular house paints can be toxic to cats, especially in close quarters with no ventilation. Try these alternative paints to decorate your house with.
Don’t forget to add some toys! Small toys like mice, birds, or balls are a great way to add some extra entertainment to your house. You can even add decor based on what your cardboard house is themed around. Want to be extra fancy? Add a miniature T.V. to your cat house! Tracing either a phone, draw and cut a hole in the side of your house. Then, take two thick strips of cardboard and glue them perpendicular to the floor, creating a place for you to fit your phone in. Play some bird videos for your cats to watch while they hang out in their new pad.
