The discourse on thrifting and reselling has begun once again. A few weeks ago Sabrina Carpenter wore a mini yellow slip dress to her 25th birthday party. Sabrina Carpenter’s stylist, Jared Ellner revealed the dress was inspired by the dress Kate Hudson wore in the movie How To Lose a Guy In 10 Days. The most interesting detail is that dress was bought second off of Depop.

SabrinaCarpenter’s “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”-inspired birthday dress is vintage #Caché from @depop (seriously!) but you can still shop your Andie Anderson fantasy for every price at the link in bio.

Who is Sabrina Carpenter?

Sabrina Carpenter is a 25 year old singer and actress. Carpenter has acted in many shows and in movies. My first introduction to Sabrina Carpenter was when she played Maya on the show Girl Meets World. Carpenter’s current focus is her music. Her 2022 Album “emails I can’t send” gained a lot of attention because she addressed the drama between her, Olivia Rodrigo, and Joshua Bassett.

Upon listening to the album people formed attachment to the lyrics and productions. The song “because I liked a boy,” went viral on TikTok. It made people sympathize with Sabrina Carpenter’s side of the situation. There were other viral songs off of the album. The song “nonsense” became an instant pop classic. Fans adore the outro of the song. It’s become tradition for Sabrina Carpenter to change the outro lyrics based on the venue. This past winter Carpenter even released a holiday album with a Christmas version of nonsense called “A Nonsense Christmas.”

Monthly Spotify listeners have grown to 58 million it’s clear Carpenter is on her way to be a beloved pop star. She opened for Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour in 2023 and 2024. Carpenter and Swift seem to be good friends as they were seen together during Coachella.

What is Depop?

Depop is an online platform where people can buy and sell clothes, shoes, and accessories. The seller gets to choose their own prices for each clothing item and via responsible for shipping the product. It’s a very popular and trusted site because of its many influencer sponsorships.

The Depop Resell Issue

In recent years vintage items become popular. People are willing to buy clothes at nearly any price if the word vintage is in the description. Resellers are aware of vintage obsession and will use it to their advantage.

The owner of the Depop account,”jbeescloset” came forward on TikTok. The brief video described the seller’s experience. She does seem genuinely excited and shocked to see Sabrina Carpenter wearing the dress. People quickly found her Depop and were appalled at the prices. She marketed Forever 21 and Hollister clothing items as rare and vintage. Clearly these items are not rare because they were mass produced in the 2010s. Forever 21 is a fast fashion company. They were very popular in the 2010’s.

Most of the clothing items on the Depop store are over 60 dollars. The biggest controversy is a pair of leopard print sequence shorts. The reseller priced the Forever 21 shorts at 200 dollars! Forever 21 prices range from 3 to 30 dollars. It is definitely not a luxury brand. The items are poorly made and are known to fall apart after a few washes.

Navigating Thrifting and Depop Resell

Yes, buying second-hand is great and should be the first option. Be aware of what you are actually buying. Many people see the word vintage in the description and believe the clothes are valuable or high quality. Technically an item is labeled as vintage after twenty years. However, just because something is old doesn’t necessarily mean it will be impossible to find.

Many people feel obligated to purchase from a specific user because of their popularity. Search the brand on the reselling website to see if there are cheaper prices before purchasing a 200-dollar item. Also, avoid using too many words in searches. For example instead of “y2k vintage orange top” try searching orange top.
