The 65th Grammy Awards is set to take place in Los Angeles in a little over a week on Feb. 5. I have always been a huge music fan, so each year I attempt to make my predictions for winners in the coveted top 4 categories. This year’s nominees are filled with some heavy contenders who put out some of the most anticipated releases. Without further ado, here are my Grammy Awards predictions.
Record of the Year prediction: “BREAK MY SOUL” by Beyoncé
Let me start by saying every album nominated within this category is worth a listen. Each one is unique in its own right and captures the essence of each artist’s best work. With that being said, I think Record of the Year will go to Beyoncé for “BREAK MY SOUL.” This song marked the beginning of a new era for the singer and gave listeners a feel for the new album. Not only is this song catchy within its production, but the lyrics also speak of change and finding a new purpose. The stylings of the song are rooted in house music and dance-pop, which marks the first time Beyoncé has crossed into this genre. It also samples the 1993 hit “Show Me Love” by Robin S and “Explode” by Big Freedia. It is a song worthy of praise and of being put on your motivation playlists.
Album of the Year prediction: “30” by Adele
The Album of the Year category is always nerve-wracking for me as a viewer because it’s always filled with artists and albums that deserve praise no matter what. These are the best of the best for the year and it’s especially evident within the 2023 nominees who put out some of my favorite albums. With that being said, I think Album of the Year is going to go to “30” by Adele. Now, I’ve always been an Adele fan, but this is one of my favorite albums she has put out. Besides it being one of her more personal albums to date since it regards her divorce, it is also a self-reflection piece, which makes it all the more powerful. The production on “30” is also so stunning, from the voice notes in “My Little Love” to the power anthem “Oh My God” and the ballad “To Be Loved,” this album truly has it all.
Song of the Year prediction: “As It Was” by Harry Styles
This year’s nominees for Song of the Year included some viral hits, such as “abcdefu” by GAYLE and “About Damn Time” by Lizzo. However, my prediction for this category is that “As It Was” by Harry Styles will take home the golden gramophone. Not only did this song usher in the “Harry’s House” era for Styles, but it also showed off a new ‘80s-esque sound that would be carried over to the album. The lyricism of this song also stands out, especially since it evokes an almost nostalgic feeling. The inclusion of a voice note from his goddaughter at the beginning of the track also makes it memorable to listeners. While Styles has one Grammy win so far for “Watermelon Sugar,” he is nominated for 6 awards this year, which only solidifies the mark he is continuing to make on the music industry.
Best New Artist prediction: Måneskin
While there are amazing artists nominated within this year’s Best New Artist category, I think Italian rock band Måneskin is going to come out on top. The band, which consists of singer Damiano David, bassist Victoria De Angelis, drummer Ethan Torchio and guitarist Thomas Raggi, took off globally after winning Eurovision Song Contest in 2021 and even went viral on TikTok with their song “Beggin’.” Since then they have seen continued success and released their new album “RUSH!” on Jan. 20. Each song that I’ve listened to by Måneskin has grasped my attention because of how their sound is so unique and isn’t like anything else being put out currently. The band is bringing rock back into the forefront for younger generations of fans with their distinct sound, style and attitude, which opens up all kinds of doors for them to continue expanding their musical horizons.
Best Music Video prediction: “All Too Well: The Short Film” by Taylor Swift
This category contained six of the most visually pleasing music videos from the last year. However, in my opinion, the clear winner is Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well: The Short Film.” I remember the first time I watched the short film and was enthralled by Swift’s direction and the visuals within it. It is a raw look at a relationship falling apart. Actors Sadie Sink (“Stranger Things”) and Dylan O’Brien (“Teen Wolf”) did an amazing job playing the protagonists within it. Despite this song being a re-release from “Red (Taylor’s Version)” its nomination shows how its impact is still being felt 10 years later within a different artistic medium.
Overall, these predictions proved difficult to choose at times because every individual nominated deserves praise for their amazing contributions to the music industry. I am excited to see if any of my predictions come true during the ceremony, as well as seeing who else ends up winning the coveted golden gramophone in the other categories.
