Thanks to social media the world has discovered that there are different types of showers people can take. Sometimes you hop in the shower quickly after the gym to wash the sweat off, but you just washed your hair yesterday. This is what is known as a body shower. The shower known as the ‘everything shower’ has been receiving the most attention. This is the shower that you take when you have extra time and can really pamper yourself. What makes the ‘everything shower’ so unique is that it is completely customizable from the steps you take to the products you choose to use.

What is an everything shower?

The simplest way to explain the ‘everything shower’ is to think about everything you can imagine a person has to do in the shower and then add 10 more steps. The extra 10 steps come into play before and after the shower as well. Based on my own ‘everything showers’ and the ones I have seen on social media, these are the typical steps I see included: detangle your hair, put in a scalp oil treatment, massage your scalp, get in the shower, wet your hair, shampoo twice, then condition, add a hair mask, exfoliate the body, then shave (this is up to personal preference, don’t feel like you have to), wash the body, rinse off, get out of the shower, put on body butter or lotion, add in hair products if you wish, lastly put on deodorant and body spray or perfume/cologne.

Your hair type and length will help you decide when it’s best to detangle your hair. I’ve found that with my fine, wavy hair I like to detangle it before it’s wet. This article here can help you decide what’s best for you. The Tangle Teezer is a very gentle brush that is super easy to clean (please, please clean your hairbrushes). They have different versions of the brush depending on the type of hair that you have. After detangling would be a great time to oil your scalp if you choose to. This practice is great to promote hair growth. This trend has gained a lot of traction on TikTok over the past year, but this method has been around for a very long time in Indian cultures. The key to helping your scalp absorb the benefits of the oil you apply is by really massaging it in. Put on a YouTube video and massage your scalp with the flats of your fingers, not your fingernails. I like to let the oil sit for a minimum of two hours but do what works best for you!

After you’ve waited for your scalp treatment to sink in, hop in the shower. If you wash your hair one to two times a week or use an oil treatment, I would recommend shampooing twice or using a silicone scalp massage brush to make sure to get your hair super clean and remove buildup. Next, follow up your shampoo with conditioner. Let it sit for a second. While I wait I exfoliate my body with the Tree Hut Watermelon Shea Sugar Scrub. Then rinse everything off and apply a hair mask for your hair goals.

The hair mask I’m currently using is the Eva Nyc Therapy Session Hair Mask. While this is marinating if you will, I take the time to shave my legs but hey you don’t have to if you don’t want to. I personally don’t use shaving oil, but I’ve heard the one by Tree Hut is amazing and they have a ton of scents to match their sugar scrubs. Then wash everything off with your favorite body wash. Finally, rinse out your hair mask and step out of the shower.

A tip I have discovered recently is it’s best to apply moisturizer or body lotion on damp skin. This is because damp skin is already moisturized and the moisturizer can then seal it in. I can’t link my favorite body butter because it’s the one from Trader Joe’s. It’s the most affordable body butter I have ever found and yet it’s super rich in texture. Trust me, run and try some. Next, you can apply your deodorant and your fragrance of choice. After that, apply any hair products if you choose to and do your skincare routine. I don’t know about you, but after all of those steps, I need to relax. I let my hair air dry and watch my favorite show. If you are showering before bed, it’s important to never go to bed with wet hair. Your hair is the most fragile when it’s wet, so when you toss and turn on your pillow you could get more breakage. Also, bacteria love to grow in damp, warm places…spoiler alert, dandruff.
