Korean beauty has been having a lot of influence on the trends we have been following in the United States over the past years. Korean beauty is all about accentuating your natural features because they believe true beauty comes from within. They like more natural ingredients and focus on prevention with skincare. A few trends you have probably seen on social media include glass skin, snail mucin skincare and puppy liner.

What is Puppy Liner?

Puppy dog liner is very popular with K-pop stars. It helps open your eyes to give you a wide-eyed innocent look very much like a puppy. This look helps give a doe-eyed effect that also helps make you look younger. It is the complete opposite of the very popular cat eyeliner that has been super popular in America over the past decade.

Is Puppy Liner For You?

This eyeliner trend is very flattering on those who have hooded eyes. You can tell if you have hooded eyes by simply looking in the mirror. When you look straight in the mirror, if your brow bone covers most of your eyelid, this means you have hooded eyes. Another test is if you have struggled with the typical cat eye winged eyeliner or have had to adapt your cat eye to bat eyeliner, this is due to the lack of space on your eyelid. Puppy dog liner does not take over the little eyelid space that us folks with hooded eyes have and that is why you have to give it a try.

TikTok Tutorial

TikTok has a few different filters that can show you what you look like with puppy liner. I used one myself and put it to the test myself to help me create the perfect puppy dog liner.

I used matte brown eyeshadow to create my eyeliner. This is an excellent tip if you are a beginner, aren’t confident with liquid liner or simply want a softer look. I used a bite size eyeshadow palette from e.l.f. cosmetics. The only thing to look out for when using eyeshadow as liner is some do not last and fade throughout the day. You can use an eyeshadow primer, but honestly, I don’t use one. I haven’t found one that I actually think makes a difference. I stick to e.l.f. or Colourpop eyeshadows. They have great longevity. Eyeshadow is very versatile, but if you are confident you can definitely go ahead and use liquid liner.

To achieve the look, turn your head and look at the outer corner of your eye. Instead of imagining the bottom lid extending upward like you would for a cat eye, follow the imaginary line from your upper lid down. You can extend it out as far as you would like then connect it to a line from the bottom lid. You will end up with a little triangle and you want to go ahead and fill that in. Add a bright shimmery highlight to your inner corner. Then apply your favorite mascara. My newest mascara favorite and the one I’m wearing in the video is the Volumizing Mascara from about-face. It doesn’t flake, smudge or transfer PLUS it’s cruelty-free and vegan! The last step would be to add some falsies, but only if you want to!

This eyeliner method is very customizable depending on the products you use and that’s why makeup is so fun! If you don’t feel like puppy liner is for you or want to try different eyeliner methods, we have an article you can read for more inspo!
