As just about everyone in America prepares for the infamous day that revolves around turkey, more desirable side dishes, and chaotic family time, there is still one question left to ask ourselves. What will we wear? Now, yes most of us will be in a family member’s living room, it might as well be the runway of New York Fashion Week. It’s alright though, there’s a lot of pressure on this outfit for good reason though. You’ll be wearing it all day, family members you haven’t seen since last Thanksgiving will be there, plus who doesn’t want to be the best dressed cousin at Thanksgiving.
While there are a lot of Thanksgiving outfit ideas that float around the internet, I think it’s time we break down what should not be worn. It’s a hard day to dress for. Should you lean more casual? Should you have a sleek edge to your outfit? Well, ask no more. If you’ve got an outfit idea in mind, take a look and see if you may need to rethink.
A Club Dress
I’m all for club attire honestly. I think getting ready in a cute outfit is the best part of getting out. You get to do your hair and your makeup to match, you feel like a million bucks. With Charli XCX’s BRAT explosion this year I’ve had an especially favorable outlook to anything that relates to a night out. However, the last thing I ever want to do is wear anything I’d wear on a night out to any family event. Besides how out place I think this piece would be, think about how uncomfortable you’ll be! On a night out yes, I honestly expect to be uncomfortable to some degree. I’m always too cold walking to the function, too hot inside the function, or starving from not eating close enough to the event. But on Thanksgiving you should at the very least be comfortable. Plus, you’ll want to be able to eat as much as you want without worrying about bloating through a skintight article of clothing or You can still look good while taking all of this into consideration.
Sweatpants
So, yes, I was just talking about being comfortable. However, there is such a thing as being too comfortable. It’s not just how the sweatpants look but what they say. Sweatpants are usually what you wear to wind down after a day of wearing your actual outfit. Or you’ve just rolled out of bed and you’re throwing something on. It also just gives a vibe that you don’t really care about where you’re going. Perhaps you don’t, not everyone is exactly over the moon to spend Thanksgiving with their family and that’s okay. So, consider dressing in something a bit dressier than dressing in for yourself! It’s always fun to dress up and honestly a form of self-love. Because when you put that much time and energy into your appearance, you are giving yourself the care you deserve. When you look your best you feel your best!
The Sweater Vest
I actually don’t have a very logical reason for why I don’t like this piece I will admit. However, I just think it is such a marker of fast fashion, it genuinely annoys me. It also screams the COVID lockdown era. I’ve actually worn one of these and besides being very out of fashion they are so itchy it is ridiculous.
The Target Fur Coat
Speaking of fast fashion, I couldn’t go through this article without mentioning the infamous Target fur coat. So why is something as timeless as a fur coat still fashion? Well, I’ll tell you. This is not the first time in recent years that fur coats or anything similar have gone viral. Just last year when, “Mafia Wife,” was trending on Tik-Tok as an aesthetic they were everywhere. Going a bit farther in time, in 2016-2019 Emma Chamberlain, amongst other influencers, popularized teddy bear coats which are a bit similar. Honestly, you are better off looking through thrift and vintage stores for a fur coat or anything that resembles it.
If you end up wanting to wear any of these pieces, do it. Simply take my words as friendly advice. While I have no fashion credentials, I consider my eyes and opinions valid enough. However, I recognize fashion is subjective so while these are my personal what not to wear opinions, don’t let me stop you.
